lacrosse field. Although the field would not hold up well if both soccer and
lacrosse were playing regularly on the field.
Chair Frischman inquired about the diagram at Driftwood with the softball field.
Breuer commented that the ball field fits there but we would need more parking.
Also, community input would be needed to add lights.
Chair Frischman asked if we had a ball field that we would need a lighted field.
Recreation Supervisor, Pat Tuma said yes. She also noted that the current
soccer field there brings in about $8,000— $10,000 from one rental group alone.
There are other regular rentals on the field. Blaze soccer is another youth group
that would like to get Driftwood back to a good playing field. Lacrosse will
sometimes put their goals on a soccer field so they can use the same field. They
will make do with what they have to work with. Full size soccer goal needs to be
anchored down so they will not fall and hurt someone. The challenge for
lacrosse players is they have to move the heavy soccer goals off the field and
replace them with the lacrosse goals. Sometimes there are posts left on the field
when you remove the goal and lacrosse players need to play around them which
is a safety issue.
Commissioner Kunesh-Podein asked that if you have a soccer or lacrosse field, it
should be designated for one or the other.
Chair Frischman agreed with that. She also added that if there is a lacrosse field,
it will be used and/or rented.
Commissioner Kunesh-Podein asked if there were two fields at the park, would it
be too much?
Chair Frischman stated she does not know if you can justify having two of the
same kinds of fields in a park, but if you are looking at the future of team sports,
you will see that lacrosse will have more growth than other sports. Designating
one lacrosse field, would be smart and then maybe designating Driftwood as the
soccer field to be improved.
Director Breuer commented that the diagram with the two lacrosse fields fits but it
is not something we would recommend for safety reasons because the balls
could be going into the other field.
Commissioner Lundberg stated that it makes sense from what we heard from the
public tonight that there is a need for baseball diamond. A baseball diamond
would make sense and have a field designated as a lacrosse field with growing
demand for lacrosse and not having many opportunities for it in this area. I think
it makes sense to also try to create another ball diamond or lacrosse field at
Driftwood or improve the soccer field at Driftwood.
Tom Trevorrow, 1694 23rd Ave NW
He brought up the possibility of having an artificial field. It is a lot of money, but it
was done up at the high school. That field got overused. Maybe we could do the
5
