May 28,2013 Page 2 of 8 <br /> Firefighter Brian Crocker requested the Council adopt a Resolution recognizing the participation of the New <br /> Brighton Firefighters in the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Fill the Boot Campaign. He explained the <br /> department has been involved in this campaign for the last three years and has raised over$26,000. He noted <br /> the goal this year was to raise$10,000 during the three-day event. <br /> Jack Pepkin,Muscular Dystrophy Association,thanked the Council for the City's continued support. He <br /> discussed the research and camps that were provided by the MDA because of the contributions collected <br /> through the Fill the Boot Campaigns. <br /> A mother named Melanie discussed her involvement with the Muscle Walk and explained her son,Ethan had <br /> Muscular Dystrophy. Presentation of 2013 New Brighton Stockyard Days Ambassador Por trait. 2 Presentation of2013 <br /> New Brighton Stockyard <br /> Days Ambassador Portrait <br /> City Manager Lotter introduced the 2013 New Brighton Stockyard Days Ambassadors to the Council. The <br /> members were in attendance to present the Council with an ambassador portrait. <br /> Mayor Jacobsen presented the ambassadors with a key to the City and thanked each of them for representing <br /> the City of New Brighton. A round of applause was offered by all present. <br /> 3. Twin Cities Gateway Presentation. <br /> 3. Twin Cities Gateway <br /> Presentation. <br /> City Manager Lotter explained Steve Markuson had a presentation for the Council this evening regarding <br /> Twin Cities Gateway. <br /> Steve Markuson,Executive Director of Twin Cities Gateway(TCG),thanked the Council for their time this <br /> evening. He discussed the numerous benefits of tourism on the economy stating tourism in Minnesota <br /> generates$32 million a day and employs 240,000 Minnesotans. He indicated tourism dollars are spent <br /> throughout the community through recreation,transportation,shopping,lodging and dining.The 2012 TCG <br /> budget was reviewed noting 18%was spent on administration while 82%was spent on marketing and <br /> promotional efforts. He noted the area has seen a dramatic increase in lodging tax receipts over the past three <br /> years. Regional Grant Awards were discussed in detail. He noted TCG contracted with the University of <br /> Minnesota Tourism Center for on-site visitor intercepts at 16 locations. He learned that the primary reason for <br /> visiting the TCG area was to attend sporting events,visit family/friends,enjoying area attractions,or to <br /> participate in outdoor recreation. Mr.Markuson reviewed new features available on the TCG website with <br /> the Council. He reported on the efforts taking place that directly affect the City of New Brighton,while also <br /> reviewing the 2013 strategic objectives. An overview of the current publications and online efforts was <br /> provided. Mr.Markuson thanked New Brighton for their continued support. He presented the City with a <br /> member city grant totaling$8,500,which was to be used for marketing and promotion of community <br /> festivals and events. <br /> Councilmember Samuelson thanked Mr.Markuson for his efforts on behalf of the City of New Brighton. <br /> Councilmember Jacobsen was pleased to see the lodging revenues increasing over the past three years,as this <br /> was a direct reflection of the positive impacts being made by TCG. <br /> Councilmember Burg thanked City Manager Lotter for his service on the TCG board <br /> 4.
