Please see the map on the back of this sheet for the location of streets being seal coated. Streets are seal coated 5 years after their construction or reconstruction. Seal coating is considered routine maintenance and there is no direct charge or assessments to the property owners for this work. Prior to seal coating, the City cleans and fills pot holes and cracks, and thoroughly sweeps the streets. Seal coating is a maintenance technique used to extend the life of streets by protecting them from wear and premature deterioration. Seal coating is a process of distributing bituminous oil, or liquid asphalt, on the street surface and then covering it with small rock chips. Traffic driving over the seal coat helps lock the rock into place. The excess rock is swept up shortly after application and the new seal coat provides the street a new waterproof surface and uniform look. In order to make the process as efficient as possible the City requests that you do not park on the streets being seal coated until the work has been completed. "NO PARKING" signs will be placed on your street to serve as a reminder. Any vehicles on the street will be towed at the owner's expense. We also ask that you refrain from lawn sprinkling after the signs are placed until after the rock has been applied. This is necessary to ensure and effective seal coat. If the street is wet before the rock is applied, the seal coat will not stick properly. Streets can be driven on immediately after the rock has been applied and rolled. Please be aware that there will be loose rock on the streets following the application, so please take extra precautions while riding bicycles and motorcycles. Stopping distances may be increased and vehicles may throw rocks, so please drive slowly and carefully while loose rock is on the roadway. When backing out of your driveway, do not turn your steering wheel while your vehicle is stopped. On hot days, your tires will dig into the rock, bringing the oil to the surface and leaving a black tire imprint in the road. Also, make sure you check your shoes for any liquid asphalt residue before entering your house. If you have any questions regarding the seal coat project, please call me at (651) 638-2056.
