Lotter, City Manager
CITY MANAGER'S APPROVAL:
No comments to supplement this report Comments attached
Recommendation:
Recognize Staff for their outstanding response and recovery efforts on behalf of the citizens of
New Brighton to the June storm.
Legislative History:
N/A
Explanation:
On Friday, June 21st, 2013 at about 3:17 pm the National Weather Service issued a flash flood
watch followed by a severe thunderstorm watch at 5:18 pm. Those watches were upgraded to
flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings at 7:48 pm. It was becoming apparent that the
metro area including New Brighton would be facing potentially powerful, dangerous storms.
The storms that followed resulted in significant flooding, numerous trees uprooted many of
which caused obstructions of roadways and downed power lines resulting in dangerous
conditions and widespread power outages.
Public Safety resources including the Fire and Police Division under the leadership and direction
of Deputy Director Tony Paetznick deployed quickly with 19 Firefighters including one Chief
Officer and Five Fire Captains responding to 20 fire calls for service in the first hour. With
leadership from Fire Captains Brad Krebsbach and Mike Schute serving in command-level roles,
the Fire Division ultimately responded to a total of 29 emergency calls including 24 power lines
down, 3 fire alarms and 2 other emergencies. The Firefighters assisted immediately in clearing
roadways of debris and trees to ensure emergency access and mitigated downed power lines
protecting the scenes as much as possible to ensure safety for our community. Their response
under difficult and dangerous conditions was outstanding. Their presence in the neighborhoods
also provided a calming effect for members of our Community knowing that emergency
personnel were present and in action.
The Police Division with Sgt. Mitch Singer with two police officers and one public safety officer
(PSO) assisted with the 29 fire division emergency calls and an additional 20 calls for service.
C:\Documents and Settings\kbruno\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKI7\June Storm Recognition doc
