Their work in response and maintaining safety and order in our City during this storm was
critical.
The City's Public Works staff deployed and reacted to numerous critical infrastructure concerns
related to the storm and power outages. All lift stations had a power loss and portable
generators had to be quickly engaged. Public Works Supervisor Scott Boller and Public Works
staff members including Tom Bauer, Derek Miller and Kris Fluegel worked tirelessly to ensure
our City's water and sewer systems would not fail. They also assisted with deployment of
barricades to protect a complete blockage of 7th St NW by large trees and power lines.
The Parks and Recreation Department also quickly engaged in and deployed numerous full time
and part time personnel for continued clearance of roadways blocked by downed trees. Parks
Superintendent Chris Wolla and Maintenance Worker Mike Schute led the staff as they utilized
several chainsaws and maintained the ability for a safe flow of traffic.
The New Brighton Community Center suffered a total power outage along with the majority of
our community. Facilities Manager Jason Hicks responded and worked numerous hours with
onsite presence and efforts to restore generator power to the facility. Parks and Recreation staff
also assisted rental customers with finding other venues for their gatherings. Staff worked
diligently with a wedding party customer providing portable generators for lighting and worked
with Public Safety for the use of ovens to warm the catered food for the event.
Recovery and communication efforts to our residents began almost immediately with city wide
e-mail notifications, web site collection of property damage and social media postings which
were led by Deputy Fire Chief Trevor Hamdorf who was despite being on vacation for much of
the recovery process worked remotely to continue posting critical information. Deputy Chief
Hamdorf since that time has led the effort to coordinate and document storm response and
recovery costs which could ultimately provide for disaster reimbursement/assistance. The
recovery efforts for the ongoing removal of trees and debris from curbside locations have by led
in a multi depaititient partnership led by Chris Wolla and Scott Boller following a decision made
by City Council to serve the public by city funded curbside debris pickup.
All of our City Departments including Finance, Community Development, Parks and Recreation,
Public Works, Administration and Public Safety have worked in partnership with the end result
of a quick response with no injuries to residents or responders, efficient cleanup efforts, high
customer service, and timely communication all for their benefit of our Community.
Dean R.
