Sunny Square Ice Rink/Petition
Chair Frischman stated some community members from the northern part of the
City were interested in opening up Sunny Square Park again for skating and
presented a petition to the Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission
back in July. This Commission was to review the idea and make a
recommendation to Council. Mr. Kvaal was present at the July meeting and is
here again this evening to give a little more detail on how volunteers would help
with re- opening the Sunny Square rink.
Below are some of the things stated in Mr. Kvaal's proposal:
• The rink would be open 5 week days from 3:30 — 7:00 p.m. and
weekends Noon — 5:00 p.m. Alternative times were mentioned.
• It was suggested the volunteers be parents and that someone would
oversee the volunteers. Mr. Kvaal mentioned that in his letter he stated
Adam Schmidt could find players that needed volunteer hours. The
woman at the Irondale School office stated it would not just be hockey
players that needed volunteer hours, but there would be others as well.
• The City would plow and sweep the rinks when there is snow.
• Mr. Kvaal stated he could replace the one hockey board that is bad. The
boards are in pretty good shape except that one.
Director Breuer stated:
Because it is the first year, it is recommended that volunteers open the
facility and turn lights on from the inside. We want to see if this works
before we invest in moving the light controls to the outside.
