September 23, 2014 Page 2 of 10 Motion by Councilmember Bauman, seconded by Councilmember Jacobsen to approve the worksession minutes from the September 9, 2014 meeting. 5 Ayes, 0 Nays - Motion Carried Commission Minutes None. Special Order of Business 1. Presentation from Sheriff Matt Bostrom. Sheriff Bostrom thanked the Council for their time. He discussed how the Sheriffs Department fit with the City's Public Safety Deparhnent and came along side to assist and support the City's law enforcement efforts. He discussed the recent joint training event that was held in New Brighton. He enjoyed the partnership Ramsey County had with New Brighton and thanked the Council for purchasing the new records management system. He discussed the numerous benefits of the new system. He encouraged the public to turn in their unused prescription drugs to the Sheriffi s Department and they will be disposed of properly. He invited all to attend the Fright Farm at the Ramsey County Fair Grounds every weekend in October. Mayor Jacobsen reported there has been a great deal of drug activity in the park near his home. He asked if marijuana use led to other drug use. Sheriff Bostrom explained this was the case for some, while early tobacco use was a significant factor for others. Councilmember Jacobsen asked what the major focuses for the Sheriffi s Department were at this time. Sheriff Bostrom stated heroin and opiate drag use were concerns for the department, while residents were highly concerned with speeding cars and traffic safety. Councilmember Strub thanked Sheriff Bostrom for his attendance this evening. He appreciated Sheriff Bostrom's leadership, partnership and dedication to the Ramsey County. Councilmember Burg asked when and where residents could turn in their unused prescription drugs. Sheriff Bostrom stated any unused prescriptions could be brought to the comer of Hamlin Avenue and Highway 96 in Arden Hills, Monday through Friday during business hours. Another drop -off site was located downtown at the Law Enforcement Center at 425 Grove Street. Councilmember Bauman thanked Sheriff Bostrom for his report and appreciated his partnership with the City of New Brighton. 2. Acceptance of Donations for National Night Out Report 14 -235. City Manager Lotter stated Crime Prevention Officer Trevor Hamdorf would be presenting this item to the Council. Crime Prevention Officer Hamdorf stated on Tuesday, August 5" the City of New Brighton coordinated National Night Out activities throughout the community to celebrate the community coming together to make the community stronger. As a part of the National Night Out efforts the Public Safety Department asked residents to donate food and school supplies in an effort to ensure that all children in the City have the tools necessary to be successful in school. As a result of the tremendous outpouring of generosity through the City, 5,036 pounds of food, 1,514 pounds of school supplies and $1,019 were collected. The donations have assisted over 860 students so far this year. To ensure proper transfer of the donations to the Mounds View School District he requested the Council formally accept the donations and transfer them to the Mounds View School District. Lisa Baker, Ralph Reeder Food Shelf, appreciated the City's generosity from National Night Out as the food shelf was in need during the summer months. Councilmember Burg thanked Ms. Baker for working to meet the needs of those struggling in the community.
