Janice Gundlach
From: Rick Bleskey[rick.bleskey@blpole.com]
Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2012 9:31 AM
To: Janice Gundlach
Subject: Bell pole meeting
Good morning Janice, thanks again for your time and it was great to see you again.
Bullet points of our discussion as follows.
• We have tried chemical dust control(calcium chloride) and found it to be very
expensive($10K for one application) and susceptible to being washed away by
heavy rains. There is another substance available (tree sap product) that we are
researching but we have found that staying diligent with our water truck seems to
take care of the issue. At this time we are committed to water our yard as often as
necessary to keep our dust to a minimum but we are still exploring other options.
• Recent odor complaint: After investigating the odor complaint we had earlier this
spring we determined it was due to the fact that our maint dept had left our block
dissolving system uncovered for a longer than usual period of time due to having
to respond to a critical breakdown of other equipment causing some odors to
bypass our scrubber system. We have since reviewed and retrained all personnel
involved in this procedure and reiterated the importance of closing the cover to
that equipment as soon as we possibly can to avoid odor complaints in the future.
• Off gassing of treated pole inventory: We are quite confident that the odor
coming from our treated stock is very minimal. As the poles cool after treatment
the chemistry is such that our solution gives off less and less odors the cooler they
become. We have had customers come to our yard and do a "sniff test" on some
of our inventory that they were planning to install in very sensitive neighborhoods.
With this being said we believe that covering our treated stock would be
impractical, expensive and ineffective.
Janice, thanks again for all your help. Please don't hesitate to call me with any
questions, complaints or concerns as we want to do all we can to be good
neighbors. It was also good to hear you mention that the city is aware and
understands that Bell pole is not required to have "no odor" but our goal is to
have as little as we possibly and practically can.
Best Regards
Rick Bleskey
Operations Coordinator
Bell Lumber and Pole Company
Office 651-203-2705
Cell 612-270-9760
Fax 651-633-8852
rick.bleskey@blpole.com
8/8/2012
