• A November 2012 survey of 52 suburban communities (not including
Minneapolis or St. Paul) revealed 67% prohibit poultry /fowl on urban residential
lots, with 33% allowing them. It's worth noting that staff is aware of at least two
communities included in that survey that have since adopted regulations allowing
chickens. This would change the prohibit /allow percentages to 63% / 37 %.
• Under the proposed ordinance, the average New Brighton residential homeowner
would be allowed to keep nine fowl on their property. Based on the November
2012 survey, of the communities that allow chickens the average number allowed
is 4.6. For the purposes of calculating this average, staff did not include
communities who did not have a limit or three communities that impose a
minimum acreage.
• Regarding New Brighton's neighboring communities, the November 2012 survey
revealed:
• the cities of Roseville and Fridley allow chickens and do not have any
maximum numbers in force
• Columbia Heights prohibits chickens
• Shoreview allows a maximum of 4 chickens per residential lot
• Arden Hills, Mounds View, and St. Anthony were not included in the
survey
Attachments
Draft Ordinance
White board print -off from 3/24 work session discussion
Coop Setback Example Maps
