Of
IVNNEW
the city that works for you
Council Worksession
May 26, 2015
5:00 pm
Present: Mayor Dave Jacobsen
Councilmember Gina Bauman
Councilmember Brian Strub
Councilmember Paul Jacobsen
Councilmember Mary Burg
Absent:
Staff in Attendance: Dean Lotter, Bob Jacobson - Public Safety Director
Guests in Attendance: Trevor Hamdorf
Fire Truck Purchase
Lotter requested the Council consider a fire truck replacement. He noted Trevor Hamdorf had a PowerPoint
presentation to provide additional information to the Council as they consider this purchase.
Trevor Hamdorf discussed the unique hazards within the community that needed to be considered when
purchasing a new fire truck for the City of New Brighton. He provided comment on the varying uses within
the City from single- family homes, apartments to industrial uses. He noted that the rail lines and underground
pipelines through the City also create new threats. He stated that each of these varying uses require differing
types of firefighting equipment. He reviewed the importance of having trained fire staff and proper equipment
in order to put out fires.
Trevor commented on the age of the current fire trucks and noted each had a 20 -year life span. He explained
how fire truck technology has changed over the years and noted the new truck would better meet the needs of
the community. He discussed the capacity of the current truck versus the capacity of the new truck. It was
noted the new truck offered foam technology.
Trevor noted that the new truck would have a better turning radius, which would assist the fire fighters in
getting to all areas of the community. He indicated the current rig does not have a backup camera. He
discussed the benefits of purchasing through the HGAC and how it would provide the City with more
purchasing power while keeping prices set for two years. He explained the cost of the proposed rig was
$549,752 plus add -ons. He noted the fleet fund currently had $619,000 budgeted for this expense. He
anticipated the rig would come in under budget by roughly $30,000.
Trevor encouraged the Council to consider the purchase at this time otherwise the HGAC pricing would have
to be rebid and the prices would increase in 2016. He indicated the timeline to deliver the truck was
approximately 1 year.
Councilmember Burg asked what fire truck technology changes may have occurred over the past two years.
Trevor did not believe that anything had changed in the past two years with regard to the rig and equipment
requirements for the City. Public Safety Director Jacobson indicated that the proposed rig would meet all of
the varying needs of the City, from interstate car crashes to residential house fires.
