Councilmember Jacobsen questioned when the new purchase would be made. Trevor stated this would be
determined by the Council, but the current bids numbers were only good through the end of 2015.
Councilmember Jacobsen inquired if the current fire truck had any trade -in value. Trevor was uncertain, but
estimated the current rig would be worth $5,000.
Further discussion ensued regarding mutual aid response times.
Councilmember Jacobsen requested further information on the purpose of each fire truck. Trevor discussed the
purpose of each fire truck. Public Safety Director Jacobson discussed the safety improvements that would be
offered in the new truck.
Councilmember Strub supported the purchase of a new fire truck.
Councilmember Bauman questioned how long the new rig would last. Trevor anticipated that the new rig
would last 25 to 30 years. Public Safety Director Jacobson commended the Council on its financial efforts and
foresight in planning for these larger capital expenditures. He encouraged the Council to feel free to stop by
the Public Safety building at any time to tour the existing rigs.
Lotter recommended that the Council direct staff to move forward with the purchase of the proposed fire truck.
Mayor Jacobsen supported zero -based budgeting for the City along with separating needs from wants in order
to not deplete the City's reserves. Lotter provided comment on the fleet/non -fleet budgeting process that the
City has undertaken. He believed that the life expectancy of all City assets had been thoroughly considered in
the budgeting process. He discussed how the Council has since allocated resources in the budget for these
purchases.
Councilmember Bauman wanted further information on the trade in value for the current fire truck. She
suggested that this item not move forward for another month.
Councilmember Strub did not recommend further delaying action on the fire truck purchase. He did not want
to see the City run out of time and have the price of the rig rise exponentially.
Mayor Jacobsen was also in favor of moving forward with the purchase.
Councilmember Jacobsen was in favor of this purchase being placed on a future Council agenda and that the
Council be allowed to ask further questions.
Lotter thanked the Council for their input this evening and reported he would place the fire truck purchase on
the June 23d Council agenda.
Worksession adjourned at 6:08 pm
Respectfully submitted,
Terri Haarstad
City Clerk
