Steve
learned his craft at Boca
Chica Restaurante on
Saint Paul's West Side,
which his parents started
and have owned for over
50 years. Noting the re-
cent resurgence of Minne-
apolis's East Lake Street,
Steve and his wife Lor-
raine purchased a long
vacant building at 3900
East Lake Street and reno-
vated it with help from
BankCherokee, MCCD and
Neighborhood Develop-
ment Center.
Burgers and burritos
are Peppers & Fries'
mainstays, but it also
offers great salads,
too, and a full bar. The
restaurant already
draws regulars from
the neighborhood.
So why Peppers &
Fries? Growing up,
Steve's nickname was
Fries (because of Fri -
as), and his daughter
Maria, who has joined
her parents at the res-
taurant, was always
dad's "little pepper."
