Several Public Safety staff received Lifesaving Awards at the September 23rd City Council
meeting; Officer BJ DeBoer, Officer Trevor Hamdorf, Officer Tom Nerison, Detective Ed
Sypniewski and Deputy Director Dan Olson. These officers helped to save the life of Mr. Loren
Balfany, a New Brighton resident, who went into full cardiac arrest while at Wells Fargo bank on
April 11, 2014.
The Ralph Reeder Food Shelf notified the Public Safety Department that thus far, they have
collected 5,036 lbs. of food, $1,009 in cash donations, and 1,514 lbs. of school supplies during
our National Night Out efforts. The City Council officially accepted these donations at the
September 23rd Council meeting.
On Sunday, September 14th at about 2:40 am, Sgt. Krebsbach and Officer Amberg were
conducting a foot patrol of the construction site at 1225 Old Hwy 8 NW (CSI). While
conducting the foot patrol, they walked along the west side of the construction area and noticed
the mobile office had lights on and a door standing open. As they approached the building to
investigate, they observed a suspect, later identified as Craig Merritt, 32 years of age from
Brooklyn Center, sitting in a chair inside the structure. The suspect was not- aware of the
officers' presence. Assistance from Officer Kingslien, Officer Riedel and Ramsey County
Sheriff's Office were called to assist. Mr. Merritt was confronted and he admitted that he had
entered the structure stating, "I broke in to charge my phone." Mr. Merritt had several suspected
stolen items in his possession to include credit cards, zip drive, wireless router, a phone charger
and Werther's Original candy. Mr. Merritt was arrested and booked for Burglary. He was later
formally charged with two counts of Burglary. This was a wonderful job created by a foot patrol
by Sgt. Krebsbach and Officer Amberg.
Deputy Director Olson reported several Public Safety members are running the Twin Cities
Marathon on Sunday to include Nate Macziewski, Matt Farmer, Chris Rother, Tony Paetznick,
Bob Jacobson, and former Firefighter Andy Vik. Our department personnel have run 121
marathons so far; with Director Jacobson running his 25t marathon!!
Council Liaison
A. Council Report
Council Member Burg reported the groundbreaking ceremony was held last week for the Pulte
Homes. Pulte Homes reported they have had 600 inquiries already regarding this location which
is the highest they have ever received.
The Exchange Food & Drink opened on Friday so please stop in.
On Tuesday, Council will have a closed meeting session regarding the US Army / New Brighton
Water Treatment Settlement.
On September 91h, Council passed a preliminary budget with a proposed tax levy increase of
1.9%. City staff have worked really hard to continue to deliver services as a low cost. New
Brighton's tax levy increases have historically been much smaller than other cities of same and
similar size.
There will be a fundraiser for Northeast Youth & Family Services on October 22nd. The tickets
are $35 with proceeds going to a good cause.
