January 12, 2016 Page 4 of 10 <br />Councilmember Jacobsen appreciated all of the work completed by the PSC on behalf of the City. <br />Annual Report from the Economic Development Commission. <br />City Manager Lotter reported Chair Paul Zisla of the Public Safety Commission had a presentation for the <br />Council. <br />Chair Zisla introduced himself to the Mayor and City Council. He discussed the background and purpose of <br />the Economic Development Commission (EDC) noting the group focused on advising the Council on <br />matters regarding commercial and industrial development/redevelopment. In addition, the EDC assisted in <br />preparing marketing plans, business retention programs and other strategies to attract development. He <br />reviewed the items completed by the EDC in 2015 explaining there has been a continued emphasis on the <br />New Brighton Exchange in addition to business retention and expansion. He than reviewed the items the <br />EDC would be focusing on for 2016. He reported the EDC has a continued working relationship with Ryan <br />Companies and Colliers. <br />Councilmember Bauman thanked Chair Zisla for his work on behalf of the City. She then thanked <br />Commissioner Knight for his years of service on the EDC. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen looked forward to hearing from the EDC on their business retention and expansion <br />recommendations. <br />Councilmember Strub thanked the appreciated the work being completed by the EDC and fully supported the <br />work that would be completed in 2016. <br />4. Consider Resolution Accepting of National Night Out Donations. <br />Motion by Councilmember Jacobsen, seconded by Councilmember Burg to adopt a Resolution <br />accepting 5,050 pounds of food, 1,971 pounds of school supplies and monetary donations <br />in the amount of $419.00 and transferring the donations to the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf. <br />City Manager Lotter reported Officer Trevor Hamdorf would be presenting this item to the Council. <br />Officer Hamdorf explained the City of New Brighton participated in National Night Out <br />activities on Tuesday, August 4, 2015. As part of the Cities NNO efforts residents were asked <br />for food and school supply donations for the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf to help make a <br />difference in the lives of those who need a little extra help. The purpose of this resolution is to <br />formally accept 5,050 pounds of food, 1,971 pounds of school supplies, $419.00 in monetary <br />donations and transfer these items to the Ralph Reeder Food Shelf. Lisa Baker from the Ralph <br />Reeder Food Shelf has been invited to briefly update the City Council on the impact of these <br />donations. <br />Lisa Baker, Ralph Reeder Food Shelf, thanked the City for their generosity and continued <br />support over the years. She discussed the growing needs of the community and reported the <br />Mounds View School District now had 30% of its students receiving free or reduced lunches. <br />Councilmember Burg questioned where residents could make further donations to the food <br />shelf. Ms. Baker explained the food shelf was located in the Pike Lake Kindergarten Center. <br />Donations were accepted Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and on <br />Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. <br />Councilmember Burg was impressed by the amount of school supplies and backpacks that were donated by <br />New Brighton residents. <br />Councilmember Bauman asked when the food shelf saw the greatest need.
