He reviewed the
candidates that would be coming before the City Council this evening and stated each were slated for a 10 -
minute interview. It was noted returning candidates would not be interviewed. He provided the Council with
several documents to assist with the interviews along with a list of 2016 New Brighton commission interview
questions.
Councilmember Bauman questioned why Kevin Peck had not submitted an application. Haarstad was
uncertain but believed his paperwork was overlooked. She explained staff could speak with him to see if he
was interested in continuing his service on the EDC.
The Council discussed how the interviews would be conducted.
Mayor Johnson introduced herself to Sara Conway and thanked her for being willing to serve the City as a
commissioner.
Councilmember Burg asked what are two or three of the most important responsibilities an advisory
commission member has to his or her community.
Sara Conway was not sure. She explained she heard about the open position on the Public Safety Advisory
Committee from her neighbor Brian Schmidt. She indicated she had served on the Minneapolis Police
Commission and Brian recommended she serve in the City of New Brighton. She believed it was important
for residents to have a voice in public matters. She apologized for not being more prepared to answer this
question. She hoped to bring to the table the public's view regarding what was happening in public safety.
She stated she has worked as a social worker for the past 12 years.
Councilmember Strub asked why Ms. Conway would be a good person to represent the opinions and concerns
of the City New Brighton.
Ms. Conway stated she spent a lot of time with members of the community. She reported she was very good
friends with Andre's wife and there were four firefighters on her street. She cared about the public safety
