4

Community

New Brighton is a historic City that is truly young at heart. The
City prides itself on its excellent schools, many lakes, acres of
parks and recreational facilities, beautiful housing, progressive
business community and numerous clubs and organizations. New
Brighton’s greatest asset, however, is its people. They are warm
hospitable and are actively involved in their community making
it a great place to live, work and play.

The City of New Brighton, located in Ramsey County, is a north-
ern suburb of the Twin Cities metropolitan area that occupies
about 7 square miles. It is ideally located at the intersection of I-
694 and I-35W. From here it is a 15 minute ride to downtown
Minneapolis or St. Paul or a 30 minute ride to the international
airport. New Brighton experienced a burst of growth from 1960
to 1970, when the population grew from 6,500 to 19,500. New
Brighton is a stable community with a well diversified and main-
tained housing stock. The median value for New Brighton homes
in 2016 is $218,600.

History

Significant to the development of New Brighton was the establishment of Minneapolis Stockyards and Packing
Company in 1881. The following year the Twin City Packing Company and other cattle processing plants also
formed. Around that time, the area was named after Brighton, Massachusetts, a cattle center of Boston. Soon,
the Cattleman’s Hotel was constructed and the Village of New Brighton was incorporated in 1891 in a district
now known as Olde Town. New Brighton citizens celebrate “Stockyard Days” at Long Lake Regional Park in
August of each year in appreciation of the industry that transformed a sparsely populated piece of land into a
thriving community.

Cattlemen's Hotel
New Brighton’s Mission:
“By working in partnership
with our citizens, we are
committed to guaranteeing
that their investment in
New Brighton will be
protected and will be
returned to them in financial
and social dividends.”
