<br /> <br />Chair Zisla did not believe traffic calming was a priority at this time. Rather, he believed traffic safety <br />and proper connections throughout the community would create a sense of place. <br /> <br />Commissioner Allen agreed a safe and secure community would create a sense of place. <br /> <br />Commissioner Murlowski thought a sense of community would be enhanced when people felt safe. He <br />was proud of the work being done by the New Brighton Public Safety Department. He believed the <br />farmer’s market would assist in creating a sense of community and questioned if the City could create <br />monthly events to bring the community together. <br /> <br />Mayor Johnson stated a monthly event such as music in the park would bring people together in the <br />City. She anticipated that the Parks Commission could assist in planning these types of events. <br /> <br />Chair Zisla commented that gateway signs or monument signs at entrance points into the City may also <br />be something for the EDC to consider. <br /> <br />Commissioner Carter believed this was an important issue for the EDC to pursue. The Commission <br />was in agreement. <br /> <br />Schlichting explained this item had been put on pause until the City’s website and rebranding was <br />complete. <br /> <br />Mayor Johnson understood that EDC was interested in pursuing monument signs in order to create a <br />stronger sense of place in New Brighton. <br /> <br />Motion by Commissioner Murlowski, seconded by Commissioner Garcia-Perez to encourage the <br />Council to pursue monument signs at major entrance points into the City of New Brighton to create a <br />stronger sense of place in New Brighton. <br /> <br />Approved 5-0 <br /> <br />Gundlach questioned if the EDC was interested in staff reviewing their notes with the group. Chair <br />Zisla believed this could be done at a future meeting. He thanked the EDC members for the great <br />discussion. <br /> <br />Commissioner Carter questioned how the sense of place documentation would be used. Gundlach <br />envisioned the upcoming Comprehensive Plan would have a more dense chapter addressing Economic <br />Development. She recommended the sense of place documentation be rolled into the broader plan as it <br />would assist in providing direction for the City for future developments. <br /> <br />Work Plan <br />Gundlach reviewed the 2016 work plan in detail with the EDC. <br /> <br />Chair Zisla commented on the work that had been completed by the Commission to date. It was noted <br />the EDC would be receiving a TIF update at a future meeting. He did not believe the group was real <br />interested in further discussing housing program options. <br /> <br />Gundlach provided an update on the NBE and was pleased to report that Pulte has been selling a large <br />number of homes. She commented that she has been in contact with Ryan and Colliers to let them know <br />the City wanted to find a developer for the remaining vacant parcels in NBE given the fact TCAAP and <br />a new development in Shoreview would be coming online.
