<br /> <br />MINUTES <br />New Brighton Economic Development Commission <br />Regular Meeting – September 7, 2016 <br />7:30 a.m. <br /> <br />Members/Liaisons Present: Chair Paul Zisla, Commissioners, Bob Benke, Monica Garcia-Perez, Harry <br />Carter, Graeme Allen and Mike Murlowski <br /> <br />Members/Liaisons Absent: Commissioners D.L. Beach and Kevin Peck <br /> <br />Staff Present: Janice Gundlach- Assistant Director of Community Assets & Development/Planning <br />Director, Craig Schlichting-Director of Community Assets & Development and Mayor Valerie Johnson <br />Also Present: <br />Call to Order <br />Chairperson Zisla called the meeting to order at 7:30 a.m. <br /> <br />Approval of Agenda <br />Motion by Commissioner Benke, seconded by Commissioner Murlowski to approve the agenda as <br />presented. <br /> <br />Approved 6-0 <br /> <br />Approval of Minutes <br />Commissioner Benke requested the minutes reflect that Commissioner Allen was in attendance. <br /> <br />Motion by Commissioner Carter, seconded by Commissioner Benke to approve the minutes from the <br />July 6, 2016 meeting. <br /> <br />Approved 6-0 <br /> <br />Report from Council Liaison <br />There was no report at this time. <br /> <br />Sense of Place Wrap-Up <br /> <br />Gundlach explained the Commission has spent several meetings this year discussing the Sense of Place <br />topic and its role in local economic development efforts. While the topic has been somewhat abstract, <br />the purpose of the discussion has been to define what attributes make a community a preferred place the <br />live. Staff developed a set of Sense of Place principals, based upon the commission’s discussion. During <br />the July 6th meeting, the EDC was asked to refine those principals. After much thought and discussion <br />over the last few meetings, and incorporation of suggested edits from the July 6th meeting, staff has <br />revised the below principals to address desires of the commission. <br /> <br /> Strong Public Safety presence to ensure secure, safe neighborhoods, getting people out of their <br />homes and interacting throughout all areas of the community. <br /> Creation of gathering places or destinations, whether in plaza-type environments, at a local <br />restaurant or bar, fraternal organizations, or in outdoor dining spaces. <br />Not Approved
