PLANNING REPORT <br /> <br />DATE: July 13, 2016 <br />CASE: SP2016-008 <br />SUBJECT: Special Use Permit to Replace and Relocate Scoreboards at Irondale High School, <br />2425 Long Lake Road <br />APPLICANT: Ron Broberg and John Ward on behalf of ISD #621 <br /> <br />REQUEST & BACKGROUND <br />The applicant is requesting consideration of a Special Use Permit to replace the existing baseball and <br />softball scoreboards at Irondale High School located at 2425 Long Lake Road. Two scoreboards would <br />be replaced, both measuring approximately 13’ x 25’, which are larger than the existing scoreboards. <br />Additionally, the baseball scoreboard would be relocated from outside of the right field fence to right <br />center field, outside of the fence. The relocation will allow better viewing of the scoreboards for <br />spectators. The softball scoreboard will be replaced in its current location. Both scoreboards will <br />increase in total height (from grade to top of board), with the baseball scoreboard increasing from 19’ to <br />23’ and the softball scoreboard increasing from 12’ to 21’. <br /> <br />The applicant’s narrative indicates the existing scoreboards are old and obsolete. The existing baseball <br />scoreboards is 7’ x 16’ and the existing softball scoreboard is 4’ x 12’. Neither scoreboards are <br />equipped with audio, nor will their replacements. Both scoreboards are located towards the northeast <br />corner of the Irondale campus and 500-600 feet from the nearest residential home. Both fields are unlit, <br />so the need to illuminate and use these scoreboards at night is nonexistent. <br /> <br />Irondale High School operates under a Special Use Permit because the property is zoned residential. As <br />such, any changes to the existing Site Plan require review and approval of a Special Use Permit.
