3
On December 12th at about 4:17 a.m. Police Officers and Firefighters responded to the
500 block 2nd Ave NW on a report of a house fire. Residents evacuated as personnel
arrived on scene and found the front exterior of the home on fire. Firefighters conducted a
quick exterior knock-down but the fire had breached into attic above garage that was filled with
lots of contents, making it a challenging overhaul. Eventually, a backhoe was used to lift and
remove part of the roof structure which had become too weak for firefighters to safely operate on
to fully extinguish the fire. Working smoke detectors alerted the occupants who all safely
escaped. No civilian nor firefighters sustained injuries. The homeowner suspects that
Christmas lights plugged in near the garage may have been the cause of the fire. Officer Wakasugi
initiated a traffic stop just south of Cty Rd E 2 and the driver was identified as Jamah
Martin, 25 years of age from Minneapolis. Officer Wakasugi could detect a strong odor
of marijuana coming from within the vehicle. Mr. Martin stated that he only had “a
blunt” and that he has smoked marijuana about one hour earlier. Officer Wakasugi could
also detect a faint odor of alcoholic beverages. Officer Wakasugi noted that Mr. Martin
walked with a crutch due to an “old gunshot wound”. Officer B.J. DeBoer arrived to
assist and he searched the vehicle finding a small baggie of marijuana just outside of the
driver’s side rear of the vehicle. A small baggie of cocaine was also later located just
outside of the vehicle. A further search of the vehicle located two revolvers with one, a
.357 magnum, loaded with six rounds of ammunition. A large sum of cash was also
seized. Mr. Martin was booked on possession of a firearm by an ineligible person (he
has felony convictions) and possession of a controlled substance.
