comparison. A Commissioner suggested opening at 9:00 am. Forty-five
minutes would be less hours than the 8:00 am proposal. Mr. Lundeen said
9:00 am would be a good compromise. Director Breuer stated Guest Service
staff member would need to open earlier than 9:00 am to be prepared for
guests, but it still would be less hours than proposed. Commission member
felt the trial run would be better from September to April because that would
be a more accurate account of when guests would want to come earlier. If
numbers pick up during that time, PREC could consider extending it into the
summer. September — April is longer so it would be a better indicator and
more people would become aware that it is open earlier. Director Breuer
suggested starting in October because of the following:
• Back to school, State Fair and annual shutdown usually affect numbers in
September. In September there is a planned new HVAC system and new
Eagles Nest installation. It may be nice to start the trial in October rather
than September. Mr. Lundeen felt an October start would be wonderful
because it is still nice in September.
MOTION BY COMMISSIONER MCEATHRON, SECONDED BY
COMMISSIONER JUSTIN TO RECOMMEND DOING A TRIAL RUN
STARTING OCTOBER OF 2016 -APRIL OF 2017 TO OPEN THE NBCC AT
8AM ON SUNDAY MORNINGS (RATHER THAN THE CURRENT 10AM
TIME) AND REVISIT IT TO LOOK AT STATISTICS IN 2017 TO SEE IF WE
WANT TO CONTINUE THAT SCHEDULE OR MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENTS.
MOTION CARRIED.
Commissioner McEathron inquired if there was a good way to track numbers
of people coming in. Director Breuer stated tracking the number of people
coming in early is not a problem. It will be more difficult to track whether
someone becomes a new member because of the added hours unless the
person tells us that directly. Commissioner Eischen inquired if a survey could
be done on those people coming in early. Director Breuer commented that
we do have access to different survey forms. Mr. Lundeen stated there is a
gentleman who comes every day from Woodbury. Another man comes from
Eagan and another from Maplewood. This speaks to the quality of the New
Brighton facility and its staff.
VII. Announcements
A. Council Report — Council Member Strub
o February 23 Council conducted interviews for Commission
positions. Third year in a row we have had more applicants than
positions. Tues., March 8th, the Council will be making
appointments to Commissions.
o Council Liaisons were appointed and Council Member Burg was
reappointed to PREC.
o On February 23 Council discussed dredging and reshaping of
Hansen pond which serves many purposes including water quality
in Pike Lake and Long Lake and flood mitigations throughout the
City.
2
