o There was a presentation on the new proposed North Park in the
New Brighton Exchange. A regional park which is of interest to our
new neighbors that have moved into the new Pulte Development.
o On Feb 9th New Brighton became the 95th City to join the Green
Steps Cities Program. www.MNGreensteps.org
o Excited to hear the Tree Donation Program presentation. Council
Member Strub presented a challenge and will match up to $25 for
each of the Commissioners who make a donation via the tree
donation program. If a commissioner donates $25, Council Member
Strub will match each Commissioner's donation up to $25.
B. Chair Updates
Presentations from the Council meetings can be found on-line. Caucuses
took place the previous evening. Good community participation. Farmers
market this summer. United Theological Seminary is the location. If you
would like to participate, contact Brian Brackish at United Theological
Seminary to volunteer or be a vendor.
C. Commission Reports on Parks
Driftwood: Parker. E-mailed his information.
Freedom: Brunell. Park is in real good shape, ice not usable.
Hansen: Fields. Short ice season; rinks were busy. Mostly hockey used.
Trail lights out. Looks good. It is quiet now.
Hidden Oaks: Frischman. No problems.
Innsbruck: Kunesh-Podein. No snow, no ice, play equipment looks good.
Meadow Wood: Eischen. Looks fantastic from the short, mild winter.
Silver Oaks/Totem Pole: Justin. The park is quiet at Totem Pole. The
Neighborhood Center seems to be utilized more. At Silver Oaks saw the
sledding hill light.
Sunny Square/Vermont: McEathron. Looks good at Vermont. Tricycle
there. The one warm day, melted the ice at Sunny Square. Picked up a
bunch of trash. It looks good.
Veterans: Stenglein.
D. Department Happenings / upcoming events
• Change of Heart Event — Zumba on February 13th. Had 102
individuals participating.
• Trimming of trees, bushes in alleys has been completed.
• Over 530 children in our facility each day for Presidents Day and
Martin Luther King Holiday.
• Over 200 youth taking advantage of ice skating, gymnastics, dance
and indoor soccer camps.
• Fewer numbers than previous years for ice rink use. Total
attendance was 5,481 at all three parks. We opened late due to
weather. Want to thank Mr. Kvaal for his partnership with the rink
program at Sunny Square and coordinating volunteers to help.
Watch your mailbox for the Spring/Summer Parks and Recreation
Brochure.
3
