Consideration of a Proclamation Recognizing Deputy Fire Chief Tom DeSchane for 34 Years <br />of Service to the City ofNew Brighton. <br />Motion by Councilmember Burg, seconded by Councilmember Jacobsen to consider a <br />Proclamation Recognizing Deputy Fire Chief Tom DeSchane for 34 Years of Service to <br />the City of New Brighton. <br />Mayor Johnson read a proclamation in full for the record recognizing Deputy Fire Chief Tom DeSchane for <br />his 34 years of dedicated service to the City ofNew Brighton. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen thanked Deputy Fire Chief DeSchane for his 34 years of service to the community. <br />Councilmember Burg echoed these sentiments stating she appreciated Deputy Fire Chief DeSchane's <br />dedication to the City. <br />Councilmember Bauman thanked Deputy Fire Chief DeSchane for his time and for making an impact on the <br />community. <br />Councilmember Strub congratulated Deputy Fire Chief DeSchane on a great career with the City. <br />Mayor Johnson believed Deputy Fire Chief DeSchane had left quite a legacy with the City ofNew Brighton <br />after growing up and serving this community. <br />Deputy Fire Chief DeSchane thanked Deputy Director Paetznick for his role in the Public Safety Department. <br />He thanked his family for their incredible support over the years and explained he appreciated the numerous <br />mentors he had throughout his career. He thanked the firefighters and fire captains that were present and <br />those that could not attend for making his job worthwhile. Lastly, he thanked the Mayor and members of the <br />City Council for allowing him the opl-K)atln ity to serve this community. A standing ovation and round of <br />applause was offered by all in attendance. <br />5 Ayes, 0 Nays - Motion Carried <br />2. Annual Report from the Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission, Chair Mary <br />Kunesh-Podein. <br />Motion by Councilmember Bauman, seconded by Councilmember Strub to accept the <br />Annual Report from the Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission. <br />Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission Chair Mary Kunesh-Podein summarized the annual <br />report from PREC with the Council. She explained PREC has nine members at this time. The roles and <br />responsibilities of PREC were discussed and noted this group meets the first Wednesday ofthe month at 6:30 <br />p.m. at City Hall. She commented further on the discilssions held at each oftlie nine PREC meetings in 2016. <br />She noted on October 2O' the City celebrated the five -ye r anniversary of the library. She reported the <br />Community Center had an all-time high 483,731 visitors and hosted 1,221 birthday parties. She explained the <br />Community Center was awarded the best place to hold a birthday party and the best recreation center by the <br />Sun Focus. She discussed the items that would addressed by PREC in 2017, such as a dog park, outdoor <br />pickleball courts, Lion's Park, the Eagles Nest indoor play -mond renovation, and would be completing a <br />Palk tour. <br />Councilmember Burg thanked Chair Kunesh-Podein for her service on PREC and commented on her <br />valuable contributions to the group. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen thanked Chair Kunesh-Podein stating he appreciated all of the work being done by <br />PREC for making this a great community to play in. <br />Councilmember Strub appreciated the renovations that had occurred at the New Brighton Community Center <br />along with the visionary work completed by PREC. He then discussed the numerous improvements that <br />have been made to the City's parks. <br />Mayor Johnson questioned what the Council could do to better the opportunities PREC had to work with the <br />Special Order of <br />Business <br />1.
