January 24, 2017 <br />City Council. Chair Kunesh-Podein stated she was very proud ofthe City Council and knew each member <br />was very active in the community. She appreciated this fact and encouraged the Councilmembers to continue <br />to be active in City activities. She thanked staff for their assistance and stated it has been her pleasure to serve <br />PREC as Chair. <br />5 Ayes, 0 Nays - Motion Carried <br />3. Annual Report from Planning Commission Chair Erin Nichols Matkaiti. <br />Motion by Councilmember Jacobsen, seconded by Councilmember Burg to accept the <br />Annual Report from the Planning Commission. <br />Chair Erin Nichols Matkaiti reviewed the Planning Commission annual report with the Council. She <br />reviewed the current members serving on the Planning Commission and commented on their role. It was <br />noted the Planning Commission meets on the third Tuesday of every month in the Council Chambers at 7:00 <br />p.m. She explained the Commission met 10 times in 2016, held 3 work sessions and addressed over 30 land <br />use cases. She commented further on development highlights from the previous year and reviewed photos of <br />the projects that were completed. The anticipated issues that would be addressed in 2017 were described. <br />Lastly, she thanked Planning Director Gundlach for her assistance. <br />Mayor Johnson congratulated the Planning Commission on the great work that was completed in 2016. She <br />asked what the biggest hurdle was for the Planning Commission going forward. Chair Nichols Matkaiti <br />stated she appreciated Councilmember Jacobsen serving as a liaison. She believed the system was working <br />fairly well at this time and she did not believe there were any hurdles in place at this time. She indicated she <br />was looking forward to working more closely with the Council in 2017 on the Comprehensive Plan. <br />Councilmember Stnrb looked forward to receiving a recommendation from the Planning Commission <br />regarding temporary health cane dwellings units. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen stated it has been a privilege to serve as the Council Liaison to the Planning <br />Commission. He appreciated the in-depth discussions held by this group along with the recommendations <br />they make to the City Council. <br />Councilmember Burg appreciated the great work being done by the Planning Commission, noting this group <br />was statutorily required. <br />5 Ayes, 0 Nays - Motion Carried <br />4. Annual Report from Economic Development Commission Chair Paul Zisla. <br />Motion by Councilmember Jacobsen, seconded by Councilmember Bauman to accept the <br />Annual Report from the Economic Development Commission. <br />Chair Paul Zisla commented on the annual report from the EDC. He thanked staff for assisting the EDC in <br />completing vital work on behalfofthe community. He noted the members serving on the EDC in 2016. He <br />explained the EDC met eight times in 2016 and continued to focus on physical redevelopment, business <br />retention and expansion, place making (sense of place) initiatives and housing programs. He was proud ofthe <br />fact the City received a Brownscape Award for New Brighton Exchange and thanked everyone in the room <br />that had assisted on this redevelopment project. He was optimistic that a project would begin on Block D in <br />2017. Lastly, he thanked the Council for their continued support. <br />Councilmember Bauman thanked Chair Zisla for his dedicated service to the City. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen appreciated the great working being completed by the EDC. He was proud to <br />have been part of this group in the past and looked forward to partnering with the EDC in 2017. <br />Councilmember Strub stated he was proud ofthe direction the EDC was heading and he looked forward to <br />receiving additional direction from the EDC on the City's housing stock. <br />Councilmember Burg thanked the EDC for their great work and appreciated Chair Zisla's dedication to this <br />Page 3 of 6 <br />3.
