what the biggest challenges were for the City. <br />Ms. Fynewever stated she was most passionate about the lack of all voices being articulated. <br />Councilmember Strub asked which of the following strikes Ms. Fynewever as the most interesting: land use <br />and variance, economic programs, business retention and redevelopment, impacts of recreation in the <br />community, or the impacts of public safety services. <br />Ms. Fynewever stated she was most interested in public safety. <br />Mayor Johnson asked if Ms. Fynewever would be most interested in serving on a potential community <br />engagement commission or working with youth. <br />Ms. Fynewever stated she was most interested in working on human rights, but understood this has been <br />changed to community engagement. For this reason, she was more interested in working on a committee and <br />then perhaps with youth. <br />Mayor Johnson asked if Ms. Fynewever asked if she had any questions for the Council. <br />Ms. Fynewever asked when she could begin. <br />Mayor Johnson reported the Council would be making decisions over the coming weeks and new <br />commissioners would be appointed in April. She encouraged Ms. Fynewever to contact the City with any <br />further questions he may have. She thanked Ms. Fynewever for coming forward and being willing to serve the <br />City. <br />Mayor Johnson and the rest of the Councilmembers welcomed Lanny Law. <br />Councilmember Burg asked Mr. Law to provide the Council with a brief summary of his background and any <br />involvement she has had in the community. <br />Lanny Law stated he worked for 20 years as a minister, 6 years in Duluth where he was involved with an <br />organization called CHUM. This work got him interested in urban ministry. He discussed how the community <br />was changing and needed to work towards diversifying. He stated he has also worked as a psychotherapist. <br />He commented on the importance of raising his kids to grow up with a sense of place. He indicated his dad <br />was a WWII veteran and he would soon be turning 100. He stated his dad planted the service bug for him by <br />demonstrating public service. He stated he was seeking ways to give back to the public. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen asked why Mr. Law applied to serve on a City commission. <br />Mr. Law stated he loved the statement think globally, act locally. He indicated he was involved at Christ the <br />King but was hoping to make a difference in larger society. He discussed the importance of the City balancing <br />human rights and public safety, for both citizens and officers. He believed this was a vital issue going on <br />across the nation. <br />Mayor Johnson asked why Mr. Law felt he would be a good person to represent the community and advise the <br />Council. <br />Mr. Law commented the Council knew best and he appreciated the concept of a team. He encouraged the City <br />Council to seek diversity for its commissions and boards. He believed that his background spoke for itself and <br />
