He stated he was a peacemaker at heart. <br />Mayor Johnson asked what Mr. Law believed were the three most important responsibilities a commission <br />member has to the community. <br />Mr. Law believed people had to know the hat they were wearing and should not act outside of what they were <br />called to do. He understood a commission member was a servant to the City Council. <br />Councilmember Burg stated based on how long Mr. Law has lived in New Brighton, she questioned what the <br />biggest challenges were for the City. <br />Mr. Law stated cooperation among the City Council was one. He anticipated public participation in the 21St <br />century would be a good issue for the Council to focus on in order to gain input from the community from the <br />bottom up. He stated modern technology could be used to gain this input. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen asked which of the following strikes Mr. Law as the most interesting: land use and <br />variance, economic programs, business retention and redevelopment, impacts of recreation in the community, <br />or the impacts of public safety services. <br />Mr. Law stated he was most interested in public safety. He understood that all of these issues were important <br />to the City of New Brighton while also having a variety of individuals involved in the City in order to provide <br />their expertise. His second area of interest would be recreation in the community. <br />Mayor Johnson asked if Mr. Law had any questions for the Council. <br />Mr. Law had no questions. He thanked the Council for their service. <br />Mayor Johnson encouraged Mr. Law to contact the City with any further questions he may have. She thanked <br />Mr. Law for coming forward and being willing to serve the City. <br />Mayor Johnson and the rest of the Councilmembers welcomed William Cook. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen asked Mr. Cook to provide the Council with a brief summary of his background and <br />any involvement he has had in the community. <br />William Cook stated he grew up in Columbia Heights and his mom grew up in New Brighton. He stated he <br />does not have any current community involvement. He was looking to become more active in the community. <br />He explained he has two kids and his wife was pregnant with their third. He indicated he was looking to <br />become more active and involved in the community his children were going to grow up in. He noted he <br />attended Bethel University. <br />Mayor Johnson asked why Mr. Cook applied to serve on a City commission. <br />Mr. Cook stated in college he was a history major and found a lot of value in Civics. He finds it very <br />important to be a part of the community and be a part of making decisions. <br />Councilmember Strub indicated Mr. Cook was one of his neighbors. He then asked why Mr. Cook felt he <br />would be a good person to represent the community and advise the Council. <br />Mr. Cook commented he was a young person that would bring a different perspective.
