Councilmember Bauman encouraged the Council to keep in mind the vision for the future should be coming
from the City Council. She wanted the Council to be cautious when proposing areas for redevelopment and
did not believe a City should be a developer and broker when it comes to redevelopment. She understood that
residents would like a grocery store, but stated she would rather see the City evolve in a more natural process.
Gundlach stated that was her intent with the future redevelopment and indicated she was simply providing the
Council with a plan or potential vision for these areas.
Councilmember Strub indicated the Comp Plan was not proposing the Council take any houses, but rather was
creating a plan for future redevelopment by having the necessary policies in place.
Councilmember Burg agreed the Comp Plan should be used for visioning and was not actual strict plans. She
stated she saw the Comp Plan as a framework of what could be.
Mayor Johnson believed that part of the City Council's role in amending the Comp Plan should be to hear the
comments being made by residents and local business owners.
Councilmember Strub commented on the changing demographics within the community and anticipated the
needs of the City would evolve as the population ages.
Mayor Johnson looked forward to building on the City's current assets. She believed the Korean Church was
the best opportunity for redevelopment within New Brighton. Gundlach stated the Council would benefit by
having big picture plans in mind for this property in order to assist a developer with moving this property
forward.
Mayor Johnson suggested the Council discuss the rezoning of the Korean Church property at a future
worksession meeting. She was happy that the City would be receiving additional public feedback from
residents during Stockyard Days.
Gundlach stated she would provide the Council with input from the City's various committees and
commissions after each group met.
Councilmember Strub thanked the representatives from HKGi for assisting the City with the Comp Plan
process and for the great community engagement work that they had completed to date.
Worksession adjourned at 7:22 pm
Respectfully submitted,
L
Terri Marohn
City Clerk
