June 13, 2017 Page 3 of 6 <br />the City of New Brighton 20 Naloxone First Responder Kits to be used in saving lives. The <br />Public Safety Department will be placing these kits in to service and they will allow us to <br />immediately administer the drug to counteract the physiological effects of an opioid overdose. <br />Staff sincerely appreciates the donation of these kits, and despite the immeasurable tragedy of <br />losing a loved one to this epidemic, staff is confident that the memory of Jake will live on in all <br />of the lives these kits will be responsible for saving. <br />Sherry Schmouse, For Jake's Sake Foundation representative, introduced herself to the Council and explained <br />she lost her son Jake four years ago to a heroin overdose. She stated was now working to help people through <br />this tragedy. <br />Jack Pracik, For Jake's Sake Foundation representative, explained they started this foundation shortly after <br />Jake's death in 2013. He reported they have been fundraising and doing good things to educate the public. <br />He stated the best thing they can do is get the word out. It was his hope a bill would pass next year in order to <br />provide for educational curriculum across the State for 5`l', 7h and 9�' grade on the dangers heroin use. <br />Councilmember Burg thanked the representatives for coming and sharing their story. She asked how the <br />foundation was using the funds that were raised. Ms. Schmouse explained the funds were used to educate the <br />public, educate schools, to continue to spread Jake's story, help kids get into treatment, and to donate Narcan <br />to Police Departments. <br />Councilmember Bauman stated she was very sorry for this family's loss. She discussed the numerous ways <br />heroin was being brought into the country and understood this was a terrible epidemic. She believed it was <br />very important to continue to educate the public. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen explained he worked closely with Minnesota Youth and Teen Challenge and <br />understood the concerns of heroin. He thanked the For Jake's Sake Foundation for their generosity and for <br />their great work to better educate the public. <br />Mayor Johnson appreciated the representatives for their bravery and for working to make an impact in the <br />community. She stated she was very sorry for their loss but thanked the For Jake's Sake Foundation for <br />providing the New Brighton Public Safety Department with 20 Narcan kits. <br />5 Ayes, 0 Nays - Motion Carried <br />Consent Agenda <br />1.
