While New Brighton Exchange is worthy <br />in all four categories, the award was received in the Community Impact category. The <br />ReScape event is held annually and exists to celebrate projects demonstrating innovation, <br />collaboration, and exemplary results in revitalizing formerly contaminated land. <br />Assistant Director of Community Assets & Development/Planning Director Gundlach <br />explained the 100-acre site is now home to nearly $100 million in market value (a growth from <br />$5 million). Before New Brighton Exchange, the site was once home to unsightly and unused <br />buildings, two State superfund sites, a dump, diesel and gas contamination, and other <br />environmental challenges. She described how New Brighton Exchange has brought good jobs <br />to New Brighton, as well as additional housing and recreational opportunities. <br />City Manager Lotter reviewed the financial impacts the New Brighton Exchange has had on <br />the City and the market value growth. He stated he was extremely proud of the resilience of <br />the vision for this property and commended City staff and the City Council for their efforts. <br />He was proud of the huge success the New Brighton Exchange has become, that the site was <br />cleaned and that the City has received an enhanced tax base. He explained the City’s <br />environmental consultant, Barr Engineering, with input from City staff submitted New <br />Brighton Exchange for the award. It was noted the award was received by the Mayor, as well <br />as City staff and our development partners with Ryan Companies, APi Group Inc., and Pulte <br />Homes. City Manager Lotter presented Mayor Johnson and the entire City Council with the <br />Community Impact Award from Minnesota Brownfield’s. <br />Mayor Johnson believed the changes at the New Brighton Exchange were remarkable. <br />Councilmember Strub commended staff on their extraordinary intergovernmental work in <br />order to complete this project. He explained he had met former Mayor Steve Larson many <br />years ago. He commended Mayor Larson, former and present staff and all those involved in <br />this project for their great work on behalf of the City. <br />Councilmember Burg explained this project led her to run for City Council as she was <br />cautiously optimistic that the New Brighton Exchange could be redeveloped in order to expand <br />the City’s tax base. <br />Mayor Johnson thanked Planning Director Gundlach and all other staff members for their <br />assistance with this project. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen thanked the businesses that have decided to locate on the New <br />Brighton Exchange and for becoming a great partner to the community. <br /> <br />5 Ayes, 0 Nays - Motion Carried <br /> <br />City Manager Lotter introduced Lisa Carlton and Sandra Daniloff to the City Council. <br />Mayor Johnson welcomed Lisa and Sandra to the City of New Brighton. <br />City Manager Lotter recognized Parks and Recreation Director Sandy Breuer for her 10 years of dedicated <br />service to the City of New Brighton. He discussed the great work she has completed at the New Brighton <br />Community Center and presented her with a plaque.
