City Council/Teambuilding Retreat Report January 7, 2017 Most Proud Of – Legacy Each official identified what he or she would like as a legacy when they leave elected office. ⇒Councilmember Brian Strub: NB is cool place to live, energy innovations, infrastructure - streets/ bridge ⇒Councilmember Gina Bauman: Always tried to represent the citizens; Better place to live ⇒Councilmember Paul Jacobsen: Helped establish a foundation for the future ⇒Mayor Val Johnson: Small town feel; that the city is a better place than I found it ⇒Councilmember Mary Burg: “The Exchange;” efficient city; solid voice for the better Accomplishments of 2016 Survey responses are summarized below. Improvements made in addressing water issues were the most often cited accomplishments. Approving and moving forward on the DX water treatment Communicating to Public about Water Issues Achieving Water quality Development and passage of 2017 Budget Ongoing re-development of NB exchange Initiating a new park, Lions Park Brown Field Award Public Safety leadership hire and transition Finance software conversion Update of NBCC Lower level lease space, remodeled, and rented Electing a mayor that is very active in our community Council support for wanting to make New Brighton better ___________________________________________________________________ Vision Pre-Retreat Survey question about Vision: Describe your long term Vision for the City of New Brighton. (Do not worry about word-smithing, just state your idea(s)): A.A refreshed brand that builds civic pride among our citizens. Unique parks that make New Brighton a destination city. I see housing that is inclusive of all economic levels but includes landlord and health department oversight. Old 8 was the heart of the city at one time. I see great improvement to refresh and enliven that area. I want to protect and celebrate our history. B.Taking care of our city responsibly by maintaining what we have while being fiscally responsible. Our residents elect us and put their trust in us to do what is right for them and our city. C.NB is an extension of the vibrancy found in NE Minneapolis, with its own flavor of history. Hipsters living in cramped NE homes seek great schools, great location, attached garages, but not split level homes from the 1970s. NB can be cool, but only if we are purposeful in our approach to housing, parks, and our commercial corridors. D.Continue improving the motto the preferred place to live, work and play. For me this might look like an increase of young families that are involved with each other and the community as a whole.
