City Council/Teambuilding Retreat Report <br />January 7, 2017 <br />Report prepared by Barbara Strandell 2 <br />New Brighton, Minnesota <br />City Council/Staff Teambuilding Retreat <br />9:00 AM – 4:00PM <br />January 7, 2017 <br /> <br />The retreat was held at The Exchange Meeting Room in New Brighton. <br />Attendees included Mayor Val Johnson, Councilmembers: Gina Bauman, Mary Burg, Paul Jacobsen <br />and Brian Strub. <br /> <br />Staff present were: Dean Lotter, City Manager; Sandy Breuer, Parks Director; Tony Paetznick, Public <br />Safety Director; Brenda Davitt, Finance Director, Craig Schlichting, DCAD Director (Engineering, CD, <br />PW); Jason Hicks, Assistant Parks Director; Patty Isaacson, Assistant Finance Director; Trevor Hamdorf, <br />Deputy Director Public Safety; Janice Gundlach, Assistant DCAD; Dan Olson, Deputy Director of Public <br />Safety; Andre Bart, IT Administrator. Barbara Strandell was the facilitator. ____________________________________ <br /> <br />Purpose: <br /> Identify Council Norms and Standards <br /> Establish Goals and Priorities <br /> Council – Staff Engagement <br /> Visioning Brainstorming <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />GOALS <br />2017 – 2021 (3- 5 years) – Ranked <br /> <br />All participants submitted proposed goals in the pre-retreat survey. At the retreat, the group voted on <br />their top goals (or goal areas). The following were discussed in work groups of three - and adopted as <br />the top five long-term goals for the Council. Going forward, the Council and Staff will further refine these <br />areas and any strategic initiatives or policies needed for their achievement(s). <br /> <br />#1 - Water: (Work group: Brian Strub, Dan Olson, Craig Schlichting) <br />Strategies/Goals: <br />1. Provide safe drinking water <br />2. Provide public confidence <br />Tactics: <br />1. Physical improvements - plan addition with new treatment technology <br />2. Monitoring/reporting/testing - consumer confidence report <br />3. Enhanced communication - PR/ Open House/ Manager letters <br /> <br />#2 - Fiscal: (Work group: Gina Bauman, Trevor Hamdorf, Tony Paetznick) <br />Goal: Stewarding of the tax dollar to make the best investments for the City of New Brighton and its <br />future. <br />Initiatives: <br />1. Maintenance of infrastructure and deliver services to meet the needs of the community <br />2. How do today’s expenditures have an impact on the future financial stability of the <br />community - tangible or intangible <br /> <br />#3 - Development: (Work group: Paul Jacobsen, Andre Bart, Janice Gundlach) <br />Goal: Implement economic development initiatives <br />• Engage in physical redevelopment (continue) <br />• Implement and promote housing programs <br />• Spur existing commercial corridors/creating a sense of place <br />
