February 14, 2017 Page 3 of 6 <br /> <br />Nazarene Fineweaver, Irondale Public High School Employee, explained she worked in equity services for <br />the school district. She described the work being conducted by the district to ensure that all students were <br />receiving a good and proper learning experience. She reported she worked with a team of five other liaisons <br />in coordination with teachers on academic equity on closing the achievement gap in order to create more <br />aspirations and opportunities for her students. She stated she had a passion for bringing old New Brighton <br />together with the new portions of New Brighton. She explained she recently invited the Mayor to have lunch <br />and was pleased to learn that the City was concerned with its students. This led her to invite several students <br />to attend the City Council meeting in order to share their stories. <br />Humzad Abdul, Irondale High School student, explained he was a junior and would graduate in June of <br />2018. He stated he has always felt welcome at Irondale and believed the school was very diverse. He <br />appreciated how staff and students came together to make decisions. <br />Topay ______, Irondale High School student, stated she was a freshman this year and indicated she was very <br />intimidated by the thought of high school. However, after attending school for several weeks, she saw that <br />everyone was together and liked seeking upper classman helping the under classman. She explained she has <br />gotten involved in volleyball, dancing and black student union. She thanked the Mayor for attending the <br />recent ISI event. <br />Mariah Hanson, Irondale High School student, indicated she was a senior at Irondale and would be <br />graduating in June. She discussed the atmosphere at Irondale and explained she has always felt welcome. <br />She appreciated the early college program at Irondale and noted how this program assists in setting students <br />up for post-secondary education. She indicated ISI stands for Intentional Social Interaction. She described <br />how events planned by ISI lead to great connections. She stated the black student union was another great <br />organization at Irondale. She invited the Council to attend a multi-cultural showcase at Irondale at 6:00 p.m. <br />on Wednesday, February 15th. <br />Richard Shan, Irondale High School student, thanked the Council for having him. He listed the activities he <br />was involved in and stated he believed these activities assisted in bonding the school. It was his opinion that <br />through these activities he was able to build character and grow relationships. He appreciated the fact that at <br />Irondale he was seen as an individual and not a number. <br />Mayor Johnson thanked the students for sharing their story. She reported she was an Irondale graduate. She <br />appreciated the great work being done by ISI by bringing neighborhoods and diverse groups together. She <br />encouraged all New Brighton residents to attend an upcoming ISI event. <br />Councilmember Strub stated it was a pleasure to have these four students present. He appreciated the great <br />leadership the district had along with the equity vision that was in place. He believed it was a wonderful <br />pledge for the school district to make to its students. He explained that the City Council cared about its <br />students and commented further on how much they matter to the community. <br />Councilmember Jacobsen thanked the students for attending as well. He was pleased by the trends being set <br />by Irondale and explained his children were very proud to be Knights. <br />Councilmember Bauman stated her daughter was 21 and attended Irondale. She described what a great <br />experience her daughter had with the teachers and administration at Irondale. <br />Mayor Johnson challenged the students from Irondale to participate in the Comprehensive Plan Update <br />process. She stated on Thursday, February 23rd a neighborhood meeting would be held at Freedom Park to <br />engage the public. She suggested this engagement also be conducted with students from Irondale and the <br />residents living around Long Lake. <br />City Manager Lotter reported there would be a web-based tool to assist in gaining feedback from the public as <br />well and stated this may be a great option for the Irondale students. <br /> <br />Consent Agenda <br />1.
