Community Engagement PlanDRAFT A-17
Community Workshops
In addition to online community engagement, Phase 1: Inform and Listen had two
opportunities for community members to give their input in person, at Community
Workshops. The Community Workshops were held in the spring of 2017 on
February 23rd at Freedom Park Community Center and March 23rd at Hansen Park
Community Center. Between the two meetings there were over 125 participants
who attended.
Gameboard
The main activity of the Community Workshop was the New Brighton 2040
Gameboard. Set up to be a self-guided activity, attendees split into groups of five to
eight participants and worked their way around the gameboard together, recording
their answers. Through a variety of questions and prompts the gameboard activity
gave participants the ability to identify:
»Opportunity Areas for Redevelopment
»Gateways to the City
»Missing Connections for Bike/Walk Network
»Streets in Need of Repair
The gameboard also allowed participants to assess and analyze each Vision Element.
The first Community Workshop had seven groups, the second had nine. This activity
was also done with the volunteer fire department, which had five groups, and the
Parks and recreation department, with one group.Sunnyside Elementary SchoolPine Lake
