A-36 Appendix A DRAFT Table #Gameboard “Aha!” Moments (as stated to the general audience) 2.5 »Communication: the city needs to be better about communicating events »One limitation right now is that neighborhood centers need to be rented (costly) in order to be used »Looking at revitalization, look to connect struggling home owners with resources/programing to help them stay above water, whether that’s for rehab, or lending or whatever [it’s difficult for people to care about lawn maintenance if they’re struggling to pay their mortgage] »Parks & Rec are good – the table really likes the hiking group, but they can be a bit exlusive. There are waiting lists for many of the activities, especially for seniors. It’s tricky to stay active when you want to, but opportunities are limited 2.6 »Better outreach to teens about park facilities (many don’t know how many parks are actually in New Brighton) »On the retail/entertainment side, there’s not much for teens and young adults to do in New Brighton right now 2.7 »More shopping opportunities needed »Youth center or game center would be great for relaxed/unorganized recreation for young people and teens »Good bike trail system within parks, but need them to connect between parks/neighborhoods »Provide more mass transit opportunities within the city 2.8 »There are a lot of regional bike trails that we don’t currently connect to (Arden Hills, St. Anthony, Minneapolis) – we should try to connect into those systems as well as build systems within New Brighton »Noticed on map that there is only one “Historic Site” in New Brighton »In general, we really like living here and feel it is a “hidden gem” of the Twin Cities area, it’s centrally located 2.9 (Projector Table) »There are differing views as to what New Brighton should be: are we a bedroom community or a business center? »Want a mix of housing that is available for everyone, at every stage of life »Right now there is an underutilization of community centers, possible ways to make it better would be: lowering fees, theme nights, sister neighborhood events Meeting #General Comments (overheard by staff or included on Comment Card) 1 One of the things not mentioned - the community center common areas need to be spruced up. As new comes it seems dark and messy. 1 Great brainstorming from each table. 1 Transportation- Add Park 'n' Ride hub in New Brighton as well as more bus lines. 1 Very engaging activity! Please try to think of more options for non-car transit and more multi-use spaces. 1 Does the city have an official Facebook/Twitter/etc.? I had a great time participating in the meeting but 50 people out of how many thousands living here doesn't seem as representative as it could be. I think many people would participate online if they could. 1 Bike Lanes - safe one from long lake rd and I-694 to NBCC. Affordable housing with public transportation nearby. 1 The signage that electronically tells folks the community events helps draw folks together. The lights in DT New Brighton at night are a little excessive - safety could be mantained with less lights! 1 Please check out greenstep cities for ideas to incorporate sustainability into city planning and development. 1 Have outdoor music in a park concert, local musicians? Groups? Like the trail around long lake (3+ mi) for local residents. 2 New Brighton is a great commuity to live in an raise a family and grow old 2 Great activity! Have more of these and more community outreach about them! Bring in diverse peoples! Sponsor and promote LOTS more ORGANZIED ACTIVIES in PARKS. Economic Development Commission needs to do a much better job of bringing businesses here so residents don't go elsewhere. Also, there should be a Cultural Diversity Commission that sponsors community activities: lectures, book readings, diversity dialogues - be proactive rather than reactive - to make people feel welcome, respected and safe
