While the causes of the epidemic are still being understood the impacts to the
community continue to be significant. While previous drug epidemics have been responsible for
impacting many lives, no other drug epidemic has taken so many lives.
Since Public Safety began detecting the presence of illegal opioids we have responded to
numerous heroin overdoses including several fatal overdoses. As part of the Mission of the
agency to protect, serve, and educate we are undertaking several measures to attempt to mitigate
the impacts. To reduce the supply of pills and controlled substances in the community Public
Safety recently installed a drug take-back box in the lobby of the Public Safety Center to attempt
to recover many of the commonly abused medications. Additionally we have undertaken several
educational campaigns aimed at providing information to residents about the presence and impact
of opioids.
AGENDA SECTION: SPECIAL
ORDER
REPORT DATE: June 5, 2017
MEETING DATE: June 13, 2017
