The
donated “change” is reserved in an account specifically for park improvements and
enhancements. The original intent of this program was to fund new program initiatives or to
make smaller park infrastructure improvements. This purchase will nearly exhaust the Change
for the Better fund, but because it is believed a playground is vital to complete Lions Park and
will serve the neighborhood and City well into the future staff is recommending to use funds from
Change for Better for this purchase. If any additional donations are received for the Lions Park
Playground, they will reimburse the Change for the Better program.
Explanation:
A majority of New Brighton Lions Park has been constructed, with the exception of the
playground. Neighborhood residents are eagerly waiting for the installation which will hopefully
be installed in the fall of 2017.
When the park became a reality, a task force was created to assist in the playground design. The
task force was comprised of six residents of the Enclave and one PREC member. The task force
researched different playground amenities, met with playground vendors and recommended this
playground for installation at New Brighton Lions Park.
One of the desires of the task force was to have a fully accessible playground. This would be the
first of its kind in New Brighton and would allow anyone with an ambulatory disability to access
the playground.
Vendors presented plans to the task force on January 18. From these presentations, the task force
recommended play equipment that requires a larger footprint than originally planned. The
