<br /> <br />Councilmember Strub believed it would benefit the Council to have a review of the numbers for parks and <br />recreation programing. <br /> <br />Further discussion ensued regarding the City’s leadership training initiative. <br /> <br />Councilmember Burg stated she had concerns with the City being ageist. She wanted to be assured that staff <br />was not overlooking its more seasoned employees. Lotter explained that doing good work for a long period of <br />time does not always mean a person was ready to be a supervisor. He described how he was speaking with and <br />evaluating his employees in order to understand their future goals and directives. He stated he could launch an <br />employee survey again in 2018 to gain additional feedback from employees. <br /> <br />Mayor Johnson spoke to the importance of supervisors recognizing the hard work being done by New Brighton <br />employees. <br /> <br />Councilmember Burg understood the City had a great group of employees and she agreed they should be <br />recognized for the efforts of everyone on staff. <br /> <br />Mayor Johnson was of the opinion the Council had worked diligently to engage the public in 2017. She <br />discussed additional ways the City could promote and measure its community engagement efforts. <br /> <br />Councilmember Jacobsen supported the City pursuing alternative options to measure its community <br />engagement efforts. He did not believe the City’s current methods accurately reflected the City Council’s <br />efforts. He suggested a commentary be added to list the numerous events the Council held with the public in <br />2017. Lotter explained he could draft a commentary for the Council to review at an upcoming meeting. <br /> <br />Councilmember Bauman stated the Council could work to amend the Open House agenda in order to spur <br />community engagement. <br /> <br />Mayor Johnson supported the Council addressing this issue in further detail at an upcoming worksession <br />meeting. <br /> <br />Councilmember Bauman commended Massopust for his efforts in managing a community situation that arose <br />while Lotter was on vacation. <br /> <br />Review Potential Members for Task Force <br />Mayor Johnson commented on the proposed community engagement task force the Council was considering <br />and asked for feedback on potential members. Lotter stated the Council would have to adopt a Resolution in <br />order to create the proposed task force. This would be considered by the Council on October 10th. He <br />discussed the individuals that have been identified to serve on this temporary task force. Further discussion <br />ensued regarding the primary goal for the task force. <br /> <br />Mayor Johnson explained she was seeking additional African American candidates to serve on this task force. <br /> <br />Councilmember Strub requested staff reach out to Dr. Howard. <br /> <br />Councilmember Burg asked if the task force would be creating a purpose statement. Mayor Johnson stated this <br />was the case. Lotter anticipated the task force would be a short-term group that met for the next six months. <br /> <br />Councilmember Burg recommended on of the groups tasks be to focus on community engagement. She stated <br />she was supportive of the City having a task force that investigated public engagement further.
