9
IX. TRAINING

This section will review the training activities of our Public Safety personnel for the
month.

Sergeant Nelson ran all department members thru a monthly shoot with the focus being
training on the UMP which is a shoulder fired sub-machine squads we carry in most of
our patrol vehicles.

Sergeant Singer attended a Mentoring and Coaching course presented by the BCA.

X. OTHER ADMINISTRATIVE

This section will review the ongoing administrative issues and meetings during the
month. This includes meetings, policy issues, ordinance changes, and personnel issues.
And, this also includes meetings of a county wide, regional, and/or statewide basis on
public safety related issues.

On January 3rd, Officer Nick Benedict began his career as a police officer after being on
the New Brighton Police Reserve Unit for many years. Nick’s training includes initial
use of force and firearms training with our in-house instructors. He then will be paired
with a series of three Field Training Officers (FTOs) for the next four months as he learns
to perform solo patrol officer duties.

Fire Captain Charlie Prasek oversaw the annual firefighter turnout gear cleaning and
inspection process. While sending this personal protective equipment (PPE) off-site
annually for such maintenance and repair involves some staff effort and the
inconvenience of wearing spare turnout, we continue to benefit from the $50,000 federal
grant awarded several years ago that allowed us to buy 28 new suits of PPE all at once.
Thanks as well to Deputy Director Hamdorf for involving us with a cooperative
purchasing group that allowed us to originally purchase this turnout gear at a significant
cost savings while also budgeting for the annual service and future replacement of this
PPE.

On January 7th, Officer Xiong attended the “Hmong 18 Town Hall Meeting” in St. Paul.
The goal of the meeting was to bring together the community, law enforcement
departments and elected officials for community conversations on how can all work
together to build a safer community for all.

With the upcoming retirement of Deputy Fire Chief Tom DeSchane, combined with the
senior leadership appointments made in the organization late last year, Public Safety
evaluated and updated its paid-on-call Deputy Fire Chief positions and job descriptions
resulting in the announcement of two promotions this week. Current Fire Captains Brad
Krebsbach and Mike Schute will both be promoted to the rank of Deputy Fire Chief, with
Brad’s focus on Professional Standards and Mike’s focus on Logistics. Both have served
as firefighters since 2005 and have been Captains for the past six years.
