She also advised that Allina’s EMS bike team is busy with <br />summertime events; this group is staffed by 16 EMTs/Paramedics who can more easily reach <br />medical emergencies on bike than by ambulance during these festivals, parades, etc. <br /> <br />B. Public Safety Update <br /> <br />Director Paetznick thanked those Commissioners who attended the May 18th Suburban Ramsey <br />County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony that was held in New Brighton. He also spoke <br />about department responses related to the June 11th storm activity and mutual aid requests from <br />the City of Saint Anthony Village from the police and fire departments based on the potential <br />outcome of the Officer Yanez manslaughter trial. <br /> <br />Director Paetznick updated the Commission on personnel changes, including the hiring process <br />for part-time Public Safety Officers (PSOs), recruitment for the 29th police officer position, the <br />addition of seven new firefighters in early June, and summertime staffing levels for patrol with <br />the addition of the three School Resource Officers (SROs) to the schedule. In addition, the 2018 <br />municipal budgeting process is underway, with an internal request to retain the DWI Officer <br />sworn peace officer position after the conclusion of federal grant funding later next year. He <br />also commented about police/fire stats so far this year, and the agency’s planning for upcoming <br />events including National Night Out and Stockyard Days. <br /> <br />Finally, Public Safety will be at the June 13th City Council Work Session to speak about the Fire <br />Relief Association and Outdoor Warning Sirens. That night, the department will also receive a <br />donation from the For Jake’s Sake Foundation to purchase Narcan/Naloxone heroin/opioid <br />overdose kits for use by emergency responders. On June 27th, the department’s Law <br />Enforcement Explorers will be leading the Pledge of Allegiance at the City Council Meeting and <br />the agency’s newest police officer, Taylor Wodnick, will receive the Oath of Office. <br />Commissioners are invited and encouraged to attend the event. Also that week, the Fire Division <br />will be participating in their annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign the afternoons of June <br />27-29th from 3-6pm to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). <br /> <br />C. Volunteers in Public Safety (VIPS) <br /> <br />Director Paetznick reported that the VIPS held their meeting on May 23rd. VIPS assisted with <br />the New Bri Tri on June 3rd. They will be selling bicycle safety helmets on June 20th at a bike <br />rode in Long Lake Regional Park. A blood drive for the American Red Cross (ARC) will hosted <br />at the Public Safety Center on June 21st. The group next meets on June 27th at 5:15pm. <br /> <br />D. Human Rights <br /> <br />Director Paetznick reported on the Immigration Forum hosted by Cristo Rey, the Latino <br />congregation of Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Brighton on May 1st that he and <br />Commissioner Boyd attended. As a result of that event, Director Paetznick was invited to meet <br />with the Head Consul of the Mexican Consulate in Saint Paul to further discuss local <br />immigration issues. Director Paetznick also advised that he and the newly appointed Community <br />Engagement Officer Brad Krebsbach will be attending the League of Minnesota Cities Annual <br />Conference as they have an educational track focused on creating an inclusive community. <br /> <br />Council Liaison
