Comprehensive Plan Update – Janice Gundlach, Assistant Director of Community
Assets & Development/Planning Director

Ms. Janice Gundlach noted the city Comprehensive Plan is updated once every 10 years and
gives a bigger picture with visioning of what the next 20-30 years could entail. Ms. Gundlach
introduced Mr. Brad Scheib from HKGi to the Public Safety Commission.

Mr. Brad Scheib, HKGi, stated the Comprehensive Planning process has progressed through
Phase One (Inform and Listen) and into Phase Two (Consult and Collaborate). Mr. Scheib stated
this is not the completed plan; there is more to come. State Statute requires cities to update their
Comprehensive Plans every 10 years; this is a large document with a lot of text, maps, graphs,
and policy statements. Based on the tasks completed in phase one, we have generated some
initial directions, ideas, and concepts that will be used to help envision how New Brighton can
move towards its vision. He stated the intent of the meeting was for him to provide a presentation
on the Comprehensive Plan and for the Public Safety Commission to provide general comments
and feedback. Mr. Scheib reviewed his presentation on the Comp Plan with the Commission,
noting several redevelopment areas of interest within the community and commented on the
future timeline for the Comp Plan.

Ms. Gundlach noted the city is working to remove zoning barriers to prepare for future
development opportunities. Commissioner Malone asked if the city is looking at infrastructure,
such as fiber, etc. Ms. Gundlach noted the city infrastructure has been updated to fiber in some
areas.

Commissioner Ghouse liked the increase of food trucks she has seen in New Brighton. She
thinks food trucks are a good way to bring in new people who may want to then move to New
Brighton.
