Planning Director Gundlach stated she believed this was an up -zoning for these properties and would offer more
opportunity for the land owners in the future. She explained the intent was to examine the City's land uses
keeping in mind what areas are ready for change.
Planning Director Gundlach indicated the City received a great deal of feedback on the value of parks and
greenspace in the City. She commented further on the potential public market concept. Mr. Scheib agreed
there was a great deal of passion from New Brighton residents surrounding these topics.
Councilmember Jones asked what the deadlines were for the Comprehensive Plan. Mr. Scheib stated the
document was due to Met Council on December 31, 2018. He then discussed the approval timeline noting the
document would have to be distributed to adjacent agencies six months prior to that time for a review and
comment period. He anticipated the Comprehensive Plan would be finalized by March of 2018.
Commissioner Frischman expressed concern with the housing and economic development piece. She was
frustrated that New Brighton was not a destination spot for bakeries, coffee shops or restaurants. She indicated
the City had these pieces, but were very spaced out. She encouraged staff to consider how to better connect
these uses throughout the City. She stated she wanted to see New Brighton become a destination spot for
businesses as well as retail. She commented on the vision page and suggested the City work to support a
diverse population, not just aim to have a diverse population.
Chair Nichols-Matkaiti thanked staff for their detailed presentation.
Other Business: None.
Adjournment:
Motion by Commissioner Murphy, seconded by Commissioner Jones, to adjourn the meeting.
5 Ayes, 0 Nayes, Motion carried.
Meeting adjourned at 8:14 PM
Respectfully submitted,
W CL, 6" LCJ-,
Janice Gundlach
Assistant Director of Community Assets and Development/Director of Planning
4
