Memo

To: Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission
Members
From: Chris Wolla, Parks Superintendent
Subject: New Brighton Lions Park Playground
Date: May 31, 2017

New Brighton Lions Park will be the next park added to the City’s park system. It
is currently under construction with an anticipated opening for the entire park
being in 2018.

While Ramsey Excavating has been the general contractor of the construction of
the park, the playground has yet to be determined. From the beginning of
construction staff felt it important to involve residents in the selection of the new
Playground that is to be built in Lions Park.

In October a task force was formed of 6 residents of New Brighton and 1 PREC
member. This team met monthly for 6 months to discuss what playground
features were important to have in our new park. This list of desired features
was provided to playground vendors. The desired features included: accessibility
for all, a poured in place surface, a Mega-Tower and Gravity Rail.

The vendors used this list to create two designs and presented these designs to
the task force. After the presentations, the Task Force discussed the
presentations and determined to recommend the design submitted by Weber
Recreation which represents Miracle Playgrounds to PREC.

The recommended playground cost was higher than originally budgeted. To help
offset this cost, members of the Task Fore have already taken steps to solicit
donations. To date, a donation of $1,000 has been received from the Couch
Family Foundation and an additional $3,000 has been promised by the HOPE
Foundation. In addition to these donations, donations from the Change for the
Better program will be used to cover the costs of the playground.

The Task Force and Staff recommend PREC also recommend the preferred
design to City Council.
