2

Commissioner Quade stated he felt it was a fantastic idea. Staff recommends
it, the New Brighton resident who plays in Shoreview recommends it. A St.
Paul group has 200+ members. It is a growing sport and he supports the
repurposing of the tennis courts at Hidden Oaks be repurposed to Pickleball
Courts. It will also bring people to our City.

Chair Fields commented that at the last meeting some commissioners felt a
survey should take place in the Hidden Oaks neighborhood before moving
forward with the pickleball courts.

Commissioner Johnson stated his concern would be to have an alternative for
tennis people to still play and since Freedom Park has tennis courts and is
rather close to Hidden Oaks, he felt tennis players could move to that court.
He also mentioned that noise could be an issue if pickleball courts are added
at Hidden Oaks. But he understands it can be somewhat controlled by the
equipment chosen.

Assistant Director Hicks explained that when the City takes a poll they try to
reach residents within 300 feet of the park. So that would be quite a few
homes in the Hidden Oaks area.

The Commission had a lengthy discussion about the best way to handle the
survey and allow resident input and move forward in the quickest possible
way.

MOTION BY COMMISSIONER MCEATHRON, SECONDED BY
COMMISSIONER JOHNSON, TO MAIL INFORMATION OUT TO HIDDEN
OAKS RESIDENTS INVITING THEM TO ATTEND THE JUNE 7, 2017
MEETING TO DISCUSS THE POSSIBLITY OF REPURPOSING THE
TENNIS COURTS TO PICKLEBALL COURTS.
