3

Acting Director Jason Hicks commented that sound has been an issue. In
Arizona they tested the sound at certain distances around the pickleball
court. They recommended that some kind of sound abatement be used
and certain areas of the courts could not be used for pickleball. He does
not know the distance that court was from a residence.
Michelle Veillette, 2908 Brookshire Lane, lives kiddy corner from the
courts. Home all the time. Can hear when there are tennis players and the
sound is modest. When the pickleball players play, it is a plink, plink, plink
sound all the time. I need you to think of that from the perspective of living
in that area. Twenty one year resident. Disappointed in how the City i s
handling this issue. The City has been talking about these courts for 5
sessions without regard to those who live close to the courts, what they
think, feel or want. Just because there is apparent interest in pickleball,
does not mean it should be in a heavily residential neighborhood where
those of us living close by can hear it in our houses. Yes, there are referee
whistles but the pickleball is a totally different sound. We moved here and
lived here for 21 years. We love our neighborhood, our neighbors, our
park. There is a reason my neighborhood is so fantastic and part of that is
because it is a very quiet neighborhood. If it changes to pickleball, it will
change in an instant and change the whole feeling of that area. Can see
out her window that people play tennis often. Here family and friends,
people outside the area use the court. It is not a neglect ed tennis court, it
is actively used. We received a letter dated 5/12/17 stating this is an
informational meeting. There was no mention of previous meetings in the
letter; it is very frustrating. She watched the last Commission meeting
video and realized that the City has been talking about the pickleball but
not including us. If you really wanted to be transparent, you would have
contacted us from the first meeting and asked us what we in the
neighborhood feel. You waited for 5 meetings before contacting us and
telling us the meeting was informational meeting. That is frustrating. At the
meeting of May 10th, she heard Council member Burg talk about how
residents were asking her about getting pickleball in the City, yet residents
were not saying they wanted to keep their tennis courts. I found this
interesting, because why would I randomly come to the City and say make
sure you keep my tennis court; unless of course, there is jeopardy of
losing them, which there is now. So now I’m coming to the City to say I
love these tennis courts and so do my neighbors. I want to say thank you
for sending the letter. I was proud of you. So thanks to Council member
Burg who insistence on us being included in this discussion. I have a
petition here with 82 signatures stating that we oppose the pickleball
courts. We want the tennis courts to stay. If I would have known how far
out you went in sending the letter, I would have gone outside my circle to
get more signatures. 82, we are taking this very seriously. This petition is
not only people in this neighborhood, but people who play tennis. I have
been listening for when people are playing tennis and run over there and
ask if they want to sign the petition because they come and play tennis
there. In a memo dated May 31st from Jason Hicks (it did not come out to
my neighborhood), it says that pickleball is played by the senior
population. Our neighborhood has a lot of young families and older
families that might move out and young families move in. We have a lot of
