2

playing pickleball there. To have the tennis courts taken away for
pickleball when haven’t ever seen a pickleball player there, seems that the
accommodation would be to keep some kind of tennis capacity there.
Seems there is enough room to have one tennis court and then pickleball
on the side would be viable. Talked to some of the tennis players who did
not receive the letter. They seemed disappointed and commented that
tennis court availability is becoming less and less. They mentioned 3
other courts that had either shrunk or are no longer available. He sup ports
at least some tennis capacity at that location.
 Tom Johnson, 3115 Brookshire Lane, lives about 1 block from the tennis
courts. His son uses the tennis courts all the courts. Doesn’t understand
why the letter did not go out to the entire City. Acting Director Hicks stated
when there is a project in a park, the City has used the standard of mailing
to people that live within 500 feet of the park. Don’t mind if pickleball goes
in there somewhere, but keep 2 tennis courts, people do use them. Why
not accommodate both tennis and pickleball?
 Michael Sperr, 3032 Brookshire Lane, lives 4 houses away from the tennis
court. He moved to New Brighton this past year. One reason he moved
here was because of the tennis court. His two girls play tennis and his wife
is an avid tennis player. To add a pickleball court to existing property
would be ok, but to take away the tennis court would break his little girls
heart and his wife as well.
 Matt Gray, 3143 Brookshire Lane, moved here about 3 years ago. Love
the tennis courts that are a walkable distance from their home. There is a
petition and not one person who was home didn’t want to sign it. There is
a lot of support for the tennis court.
 Jason Lee, 1501 28th Ave NW, been in New Brighton for 25 years. One of
the selling points of buying my house was because the tennis court was
right over the hill from his house. He uses the tennis court 3 to 4 times per
week. He said almost every day between 4pm and dusk, there are usually
people using that court. Feels like over the past couple years, the use has
increased. There are some pickleball players that come occasionally and
he can hear them from his house. It does get annoying. Strongly in favor
of keeping the tennis courts as they are and consider placing the pickleball
courts in another location that is not so close to residents. Feels the courts
are used almost every day.
 A Commissioner asked Acting Director Hicks about the pickleball noise.
Acting Director Jason Hicks commented that it is between 64 and 72
decibels. 70 decibels compares to a toilet flushing or a shower.
 Tracy Veillette, 2908 Brookshire Lane, tennis decibels are have you
identified the decibel level for tennis? Can see the tennis court from his
window. Lived there 21 years. The tennis court is used consistently.
 Acting Director Jason Hicks also mentioned that a whistle from soccer
referees is about 100 decibels.
 Jason Lee, 1501 28th Ave NW, stated it is not only a matter of the decibel
level, but it is an abrupt sharp sound that keeps going. It is a nnoying. It is
like the woodpecker that comes to his house.
 A Commissioner commented that at another meeting it was noted that
there is pickleball equipment that can be purchased to keep the decibels
down.
