<br />retail was changing and then commented on the City’s economic development, areas planned for <br />redevelopment along with housing opportunities within the community. <br /> <br />Commissioner Garcia-Perez questioned how many multi-family housing projects the City had that was <br />considered affordable housing units. Gundlach was uncertain of the exact number or percentage. She <br />explained most of the City’s current affordable multi-family units were built in the mid-1960’s or <br />1970’s. Mr. Scheib reported the affordable units within the City were full. <br /> <br />Chair Zisla stated the City’s ability to make land available for redevelopment was diminishing, given the <br />fact there was very little vacant land available. <br /> <br />Commissioner Benke discussed how the City had worked in the past to acquire land and spur <br />redevelopment. <br /> <br />Commissioner Garcia-Perez questioned where staff considered “downtown” to be in New Brighton. Mr. <br />Scheib described the location he identified as the downtown area in New Brighton. <br /> <br />Commissioner Garcia-Perez discussed how difficult it was to provide pedestrian-friendly connections <br />through the community given the major freeways that divide the City. She commented on how a trolley <br />could benefit the residents of New Brighton. Gundlach stated residents have been complaining about <br />the north-south connection for quite some time. <br /> <br />Mr. Scheib encouraged the EDC to consider how they would define economic development. <br /> <br />Commissioner Carter believed the City had to find ways to stick out or be exceptional. <br /> <br />Chair Zisla agreed the City needed to find a higher identity amongst all other suburbs. <br /> <br />Commissioner Garcia-Perez discussed the need for additional restaurants in the City. She explained that <br />Barley John’s was very disconnected from the downtown area of the City. <br /> <br />Commissioner Dunsworth stated the City may have to encourage residents to buy local and shop local in <br />order to spur economic development within the community. <br /> <br />Gundlach commented she was interested to see how successful the farmer’s market was this year. <br /> <br />Commissioner Dunsworth understood the location was a concern to some residents, but stated the <br />seminary was the best option available at this time. It was her hope the community would continue to <br />support the farmer’s market and noted she had 22 vendors lined up for 2017. <br /> <br />Commissioner Murlowski questioned if the City Hall parking lot could be used for the farmer’s market. <br />Gundlach commented the City was not asked to host the farmer’s market. Further discussion ensued <br />regarding the community building opportunities surrounding the farmer’s market. <br /> <br />Chair Zisla asked what the next step was with regard to the Comprehensive Plan for the EDC. Mr. <br />Scheib stated he would be looking for additional ideas and concrete action steps from the EDC. <br /> <br />Mr. Scheib thanked the EDC for their input and sated he would be forwarding his slideshow <br />presentation to the members. He encouraged the EDC members to contact him with any other ideas they <br />may have. <br />
