February 13, 2018 Page 1 of 7 <br />- 13PIGH, COUNCIL, PROCEEDINGS <br />the city that works fur you THE CITY OF NEW BRIGHTON <br />Pursuant to notice thereof, a regular meeting of the New Brighton City Council was held Tuesday <br />February 13, 2018 at 6:30 pm in the New Brighton Council Chambers. <br />Present: Mayor Johnson, Councilmembers Allen, Burg, Dunsworth, and Jacobsen <br />Absent: <br />Also Present: Dean Lotter -City Manager, Sarah Sonsalla-City Attorney, Brenda Davitt-Finance <br />Director <br />Call to Order I Call to Order <br />Mayor Johnson called the meeting to order at 6:41 pm. <br />Pledge of Allegiance <br />Mayor Johnson led the Council in the Pledge of Allegiance. <br />Public Comment Forum <br />Mayor Johnson opened the Public Forum for comments from the public. <br />' Ron Barnell, 1783 19th Terrace, stated he was a member of an organization called Clean <br />Elections Minnesota. He explained this group was concerned with big money and dark money <br />into politics and its undue influence. He indicated he wanted the citizens of the community to <br />decide an election and not dark money. He reported the only way to change this situation <br />would be to make a constitutional amendment. He commented that 19 states were already <br />interested in a change, Minnesota being one of them. He encouraged the City Council to pass <br />along a Resolution of Support to the legislature addressing this matter. <br />City Manager Lotter requested Mr. Barnell leave his contact information with staff and noted <br />he would set up a meeting between staff and Mr. Barnell to address this matter further. <br />Nasreen Fynewever, 2531 Innsbrook Court, thanked the Council for their support over the past <br />year. She stated it has been a pleasure serving as a Planning Commissioner for the past year. <br />She congratulated Councilmember Allen and Councilmember Dunsworth on their new <br />positions. She introduced John Maravelas to the Council and asked him to come forward and <br />speak to the community about the new gym he would be bringing to the City of New Brighton. <br />John Maravelas, Fit 4 Life, thanked the Council for their time and stated his gym was currently <br />located in Circle Pines. He stated he offers group high intensity fitness classes and personal <br />training in a fitness center. He explained his move to New Brighton would allow him to have <br />more gym space. He stated he has been impressed by the number of people who have reached <br />out to him from the community. <br />Mayor Johnson welcomed Mr. Maravelas to the City of New Brighton and wished him well in <br />his new venture. She noted his gym would be located in the old TUV SUD space. <br />Ben Jones, 631 17th Avenue NE, stated he understood the Council was considering removing <br />him from the Planning Commission. He reported the previous Council had decided to extend <br />Council positions for incumbents by proposing to move to even numbered year elections.
