<br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Council Worksession <br />March 13, 2018 <br />5:00 pm <br /> <br />Present: Mayor Valerie Johnson <br /> Councilmember Graeme Allen <br /> Councilmember Mary Burg <br /> Councilmember Emily Dunsworth (arrived at 5:43 p.m.) <br /> Councilmember Paul Jacobsen <br />Absent: <br /> <br />Staff in Attendance: Dean Lotter, Terri Spangrud <br /> <br />Guests in Attendance: Matthew Johnson <br /> <br />Commissioner Interviews <br /> <br />Lotter reported only one of the remaining candidates was able attend this evening. He explained the Council <br />could hold this interview and then review the packet of information provided by City Clerk Spangrud in order <br />to make decisions on the Commission appointments. <br /> <br />Mayor Johnson welcomed Matthew Johnson and asked him to tell the Council a little bit about himself and his <br />experiences in the community. <br /> <br />Matthew Johnson stated he currently worked for Roseville Parks and Recreation and manage the skating <br />center. Prior to that, he managed recreation programs and outdoor spaces for Roseville. Prior to that he was at <br />the University of Minnesota managing their recreation and intermural programs. He stated he was an avid user <br />of the Community Center. He explained his four-year-old daughter was an avid visitor to the City’s parks. <br />Also, his daughter has participated in swimming lessons at the Community Center. He ind icated he had a <br />passion for sustainability and environmental issues. He commented on the importance of connectivity in the <br />community for bikers and walkers. He discussed the potential of a bike share program. <br /> <br />Councilmember Burg asked why he had decided to apply to serve on a City Commission. <br /> <br />Mr. Johnson stated he was interested in engaging in the community and its parks. He indicated this was the <br />best opportunity for him to make a mark on the community given his knowledge and job experience. <br /> <br />Councilmember Jacobsen asked what the three most important responsibilities a commission member had to <br />the community. <br /> <br />Mr. Johnson stated this was a wonderful question. He explained hearing an understanding he was representing <br />the voice of the community as a whole and not just himself. Second, to understand the role is as an advisory <br />member and he was serving at the will of the Council. Lastly, he would want to be thoughtful and forward <br />thinking to be able to make decisions that are best for today while also considering 20 years from now. <br /> <br />Councilmember Allen asked how he would respond if a member of the community were to contact him
