Research on Body Worn Cameras
The Benefits of Body-Worn Cameras: new findings from a randomized controlled trial at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, UNLV Center for Crime and Justice Policy (September 2017)
•Results suggest that the placement of BWCs reduced complaints and use of force reports relative to non-BWC wearing officers
•BWC -wearing officers generated moderately more arrests and issued more citations than their control counterparts
•Study suggests that the benefits of cameras (at least in terms of cost savings due to the reduction in complaints) far outweigh the costs of the BWC program
•Benefits might not be so great in a community characterized by positive police-community relations prior to the introduction of BWCs
•Need for rigorous research regarding outcomes and cost-benefit analyses, as well as the unintended benefits or consequences of their implementation
