Parks & Recreation Updates will be emailed around the 10th of each month. <br />Parks and Recreation Department Happenings <br />January 2018 <br /> <br /> IMPROVING HEALTH <br /> 398 participants enjoyed group fitness classes <br /> The 13th annual Health and Fitness Expo, sponsored by New Brighton Parks and Recreation, was <br />hosted at NBCC on January 6. The event provided an open house for visitors to check out the <br />fitness center as well as sample group fitness classes. Approximately 35 vendors showcased <br />their products and information to attendees. During the event, a total of 50 memberships, <br />totaling 105 members, were sold. Visitors also had the opportunity to sample group fitness <br />classes, pickleball, golf, youth sports or ask questions of personal trainers. In addition to staff, a <br />total of 12 volunteers donated 36.5 hours of service during the event. <br /> The winter adaptive bowling season has begun and teens and young adults are bowling at <br />Mermaid Lanes. <br /> 6 teen and adults are participating in guitar lessons at the NBCC on Tuesdays evening. <br /> The winter women’s volleyball league started held at Highview School with 7 teams competing. <br /> 11 seniors boarded the Eagles Nest Van on January 9 for a trip to a new and unique restaurant in <br />downtown Saint Paul, 7th Street Food Truck Park. The group enjoyed choosing meals from the <br />various indoor food trucks and checking out the eclectic vintage décor that filled the building. <br /> 8 seniors gathered at NBCC to watch the executive chef of Chandler Place prepare a seasonal <br />meal. Chef Dan took time to answer questions, discuss healthy diet and offer cooking tips. <br /> A Humana Representative spoke with 16 seniors about healthy sleep on January 24. <br /> Seniors gathered at the community center to learn about the Club 55 program and share their <br />ideas to help the program grow and improve. <br /> A representative from Landmark Tours informed 12 perspective travelers about the many <br />exciting guided travel opportunities they offer at a Travel Show on January 30. <br /> 41 adults earned insurance discounts and increased driver safety though the AARP “Smart <br />Driver” Safety Classes offered at NBCC in January <br /> PROTECTING NATURAL RESOURCES <br /> When not plowing snow or maintaining rinks, maintenance staff have been trimming trees <br />throughout the park system. Work has been performed at Innsbruck, Sunny and south Hansen. <br /> FOSTERING HEALTHY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT <br /> 170 participants learned to swim <br /> 57 participants in camps learned basketball and soccer skills <br /> 404 children participated at the January 15 Adventure Day at the Eagles Nest <br /> 62 children ages 3-11 are attending Wednesday Tap, Jazz and Ballet dance classes at the NBCC <br /> 54 children ages 4-14 are learning gymnastic skills on Mondays at Irondale High School <br /> 17 children ages 5-8 are learning swizzles and glides at ice skating classes at Freedom Park <br /> 59 children and teens are developing their coordination and learning basic self-defense skills in <br />martial arts classes at NBCC <br /> The Eagles Nest hosted 11 school & daycare groups in January <br /> As an alternative to full goals at the outdoor rinks, Park maintenance staff built two pond hockey <br />goals for Freedom Park. <br /> SUSTAINING FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
